3 month cheap rent in New York City
Hi
I am going to be doing a summer internship in 2018. I will be staying from July 2nd to September 30th, and I need someplace to stay during that time. I am willing to share a space. As I am a student my budget is no more than $700-900 a month. I know that NYC is very expensive, but is it really that impossible to find something for this price? Also, if I am willing to share with someone?
My internship will be near the Rockefeller Center and Times Square.
I hope that some of you can help.

Have you contacted NYU, SVA, or New School to see if any dorm space is available during the summer?
In New York, few people live in the neighborhood where they work. You will learn the subway within days.

Check out Skiergirl's suggestion. I've heard about Gypsy too.
Also see if you can facebook or message students from the local NYC universities, including NYU and Fordham. But there are many others.) They may need subletters. I think you might be able to rent NYU housing if all else fails, but as I recall the price was more than you listed.
Also, you may want to FB and message people at your home school to find out if any other students on your campus are destined for New York and are willing to share. Or they have a link to a place.
HappyTravler-- A few official co-ops may give a housing allowance but mostly, students find housing on their own. Also, some high-tech internships pay well, but many, many students are expected to work for college credit (ie no money at all) or near minimum wage.
Good luck, OP!

I meant only that the NYC schools might offer less expensive roomimg in dorms that aten't 100% full.. Her own college should assist her with some leads. Just went through this with a student wanting cheap housing in Boston with parking, a pipe dream.

Neighborhoods to look into might include Inwood, and Woodside, Jackson Heights, and Ridewood, Queens. Parts of the southern Bronx are walkable to quick train ride to Manhattan. Maybe East Harlem. You will very likely have to share. Also look near PATH stations in NJersey. Go up to City College in Upper Manhattan and look at their billaboards if they have any. HAve a subway map at the ready when you look at listings.

This is a very difficult price point. To give you some idea, the 92nd Street YMHA offers shared doubles starting at $1500 per month on their monthly rate plans for a "small" room, which has only a single closet and shared bathrooms on the floor, but all utilities, cable, and access to the health club on site. (And you'd need to apply soon for summer 2018.) You have to apply for these rooms and have an internship. Single rooms start at $1950.
This is basically double your max budget, but that's the going rate for monthly intern housing. I doubt that the YMCAs would be any cheaper, but it's certainly worth looking into. THere's a YMCA in Fort Green, for example, that might be cheaper.
I don't want to discourage you too much, but I do want you to be aware of the true cost of housing here, which is enormous. $1000 per month for a room in a shared apartment is considered a deal. You might want to go the AirBnB route, just make sure you rent a legitimate apartment from the site and don't do a side deal of any kind. But monthly rentals are allowed and are quite legal in NYC, and a lot of students who have leases go home or travel in the summer and sublet their rooms or their apartments. So that's something to think about.
I know there are also houses were people rent rooms by the month to students and interns. One of my neighbors does this in her brownstone, mostly to visiting curators at the Metropolitan Museum.
