3 days in NYC with my Grandma!

Hi,

My 81 year old grandmother and I are going to be in NYC from June 30th - July 3rd. She might be 81 but she is full of energy and always up for anything.

We have booked our hotel (Times Square), a 2 day hop on hop off (easier for her to get around), Top of the Rock, 911 Museum and a helicopter tour. I have a fairly good itinerary planned and mapped out. We are taking this trip, mostly for her to be able to check it off her bucket list. I have been to NYC before so, I have seen a number of the sites.

I would like help in finding something special to surprise her with while we are there! I'm stumped. I suggested a broadway show earlier to her but she didn't seem thrilled. I just want to make sure she has the best time ever! Any suggestions are welcome!

Thanks,
Britany

If you tell us what her interests are it may spark a thought - since NYC has something for anyone.

Would she like a special lunch, a special tea, a carriage ride in Central Park, visiting some particular sight like Lincoln Center or the summer spectacular at Radio City Music Hall? What does NYC mean to her?

Would she like the see the Cloisters - a renaissance building moved her from europe? A boat trip around the harbor? Possibly in the evening with dinner?

By the way, I would cancel the helicopter ride They are not allowed to fly over the city at all - can only fly up the east river and back down the hudson river to the heliport. IMHO Top of of the Rock has views much better and there is no safety issue (If the helicopter crashes it goes down in the river - there is no place on land and there have been several accidents in recent years - some with deaths).

A special meal is always nice. Also, check out the summer outdoor movies at Bryant Park. or a tour with a Big Apple Greeter...bigapplegreeter.org

Even though most New York experts caution about the helicopter ride, we did it and loved it!

brit85: How fabulous that you are taking your grandmother to NYC -

I am with the suggestion made by SeaF and would get tickets to a show on Broadway. I am sure that you are aware that it will be quite hot/humid when you visit and that can be tiring especially on a older person and I think your grandmother may quite enjoy it. Nice to sit and in air conditioning. http://www.travelzoo.com/entertainment/new-york/

I also vote against the helicopter ride unless this is also on her bucket list.

Saturdays and Sundays the Loeb Noathouse serves brunch or maybe she would enjoy afternoon tea with a view of Central Park? I understand the Mandarin Oriental has outstanding views as well as the restaurant in Bergdorf Goodman.

Thanks for all the responses! She picked the helicopter ride herself, so I dont know if she would be willing to cancel it. Im not sure if we could get a refund, however she did just book yesterday. Does it take you past the Statue of Liberty and a view of the skyline?

I think she would love the Rockettes! I will definitely look into that And I do like the idea of the restaurant at Bergdorf as well.

No, do not go to Tavern on the Green.

If you want to take her to place with a nice view and decent food try The Water Club.

A cab will be needed for both directions. http://thewaterclub.com/menus/

Take grandma to Coney Island, on the WonderWheel, the Cyclone, the Thunderbolt, the space launcher, the Pier from which she could dive off into the ocean.
And ifcourse the crack den where she could drop acid and smoke weed like she did back in the 60's.
