What are their ages? What are your interests? What are the kids interests? Where are you going to and from if this is a three day stop? If you give info for these things maybe it would help pinpoint better ideas. Texas is vast and having lived most of my life there, a lot of the stuff is conglomerates into pockets of travel areas that are miles and miles apart

How old are your kids? What type of things interest them?

Keep in mind Texas is a BIG state and points of interest can be pretty spread out. For instance it's a 5 hour drive from Dallas to San Antonio so visiting both of those cities during a 3 night stay in the State might be impractical. How much driving are you willing to do?

If you stay in the Dallas area you can visit both Dallas and Fort Worth (30 to 45 minute drive between the two - lots of interesting things to see/do in both cities. Six Flags amusement ark is midway between the two. State Fair of Texas is held in Dallas between 9/26 and 10/19. Great Wolf Lodge is in nearby Grapevine.

San Antonio has the Riverwalk & the Alamo plus attractions like Sea Worl.

Sorry for not giving enough information. The kids will be 11 and 6 years. We only want to stay in one place for the 3 nights but not sure what city would be best. we are not concerned about amusement parks, but more seeing the "real" Texas and getting a little taste of it. My first thought was San Antonio due to the Alamo, but would Dallas or Austen be better?

October is a good time to visit either San Antonio or the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Lots to do in both cities.

San Antonio has the Riverwalk, the Alamo (which is very small and doesn't take long), the Missions, the zoo, SeaWorld, nearby Natural Bridge Caverns, Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch and much more.

Dallas has the State Fair in October which is great fun. It is held Sept 26 to October 19. There are lots of livestock and other shows to see, as well as a walk through butterfly pavilion. Dallas also has the Perot Museum of Nature and Science that is great for kids and the Dallas World Aquarium. Nearby Ft. Worth has the Stockyards, Sundance Square and the excellent Fort Worth Zoo and more.

I don't think you can go wrong with either. Take a look at some of the links and see what interest you and your family. Have a great time.

Although the Alamo will not take a long time to see itself I would pick San Antonio with a day trip to hill country and Austin area if you like. The above poster did a great job with a things to do list for both places. I have always felt Dallas is much more adult oriented in terms of the things that make Dallas what it is.

Austin has a cool vibe for both adults and kids. The riverwalk in San Antonio is fun to just walk around and take a quick boat cruise on the river. The bats coming out in Austin would be something fun for the kids as well.
