2-3 days from Orange, VA to Rainelle, WV

I need help. Born in Virginia, raised in PA. Visiting family in Orange, VA and then, I want to take 2-3 days to explore West Virginia on a road trip with my 16 year old son. My father was from Rainelle, WV. He died when I was 4 years old and I want to see where most of his family came from and get a glimpse of what the state is like on way to Williamstown, KY to visit family.

My son and I like to hike, eat and I plan on taking a great many pictures. Any suggestions anyone might have would be greatly appreciated as I want to maximize my time in WV, yet have a relaxing and rewarding visit.
