120/Tioga Yosemite 'detour' from the 395
On our way north to Tahoe from the 395, we were considering a 120/Tioga detour if it's worth it. Maybe just a little 'picnic' detour (we don't want to go that far, maybe an hour so total drive time). Does anyone have any takes on that first 15 or 20 miles of the 120 up from the 395? Thx.

There are some really beautiful views along Tioga Pass even before you get to Tulomne Meadows. There are stops for vista views and there are picnic areas at some of the small lakes along the route. You should be able to find a nice place to stop for a picnic.

Tioga Lake and Ellery Lake are both outside the park so you would not pay the entrance fee. Tenaya Lake is inside the park and about 45 minutes from Lee Vining. You'd also pass some amazing vista points (Olmstead is especially nice-so much granite) you could stop at to stare at the beauty mouth open!

Another beautiful lake near Ellery Lake is Saddlebag Lake, altitude 10,000 feet. "The road in is bumpy and slow, but it's short, and soon you round a bend and this stark but beautiful lake comes into view." Another little bit of heaven. Usually open mid-June to the end of August.

The Ellery/Tioga Lake suggestions are really great. The road is very scenic, tho' a little unsettling for some. It feels very exposed in places. But the vistas are fantastic. Be sure that the driver doesn't have to drive both directions.
Another possible stop-off is at Mono Lake. They have one of the better visitor centers I've seen in a while, and the lake is really interesting, esp with the Tufa columns. If you have the time, I'd recommend a stop there too.

Been going from Mammoth Lakes into Yosemite on day trips to Tuolomne Meadows for several summers now and the same person drives in and out with no problems. Maybe it's because the other driver would be me?
While it's true that Mono lake has a good visitors center and is very interesting it can hellashisly hot there with very little cover. At least at the higher elevation along Tioga Pass you get that nice cool air and the shade of some trees.
