10 hours at LA airport. Any ideas?
We (me, wife and daughter) have a lay over at LA for about 10 hours (noon to 10pm). Can anyone give some ideas on better things to do than roaming around in the airport terminal?
I don't want to rent a car. A leisurely walk or a train ride to a close-by attraction or even just a park or something is what I am looking for.
Thanks!

There are no leisurely walks near LAX.
You could, however, take a taxi or public transportation to the Hermosa Beach/Manhattan Beach area -- it's very close, very pleasant, with shopping, restaurants, the beach (duh!), and long path connecting several towns.
What will you do with your luggage?

You could also go up to the Getty Museum - if your layover is during the day and you want to get away for a few hours. http://www.getty.edu/museum/

You can take the Big Blue Bus from the airport to Santa Monica where there are places to walk, shop, restaurants. This from the Santa Monica city website:
Big Blue Bus: The Rapid 3 line runs between the Aviation Green Line Metro Station and downtown Santa Monica with additional stops within the city. From the transportation islands at the airport, shuttles run to and from the Green Line Station (Route G) and to the LAX City Bus Center transit station (Route C) at Parking Lot C, which is the best place to catch the Rapid 3. Fare is $1 (50 cents for seniors and passengers with disabilities). Allow about 20-30 minutes to make the shuttle connection and travel. The non-express #3, which makes more stops en route to Santa Monica (about 30 minutes to downtown) and in town, also operates from the transit center at Parking Lot C.

as above-- santa monica is a great choice-- you could hit shopping on the promenade, the pier and the beach all easily. another good choice which is even closer to the airport is venice beach... have a great lunch on the boardwalk or go rollerblading... you could be there in 20 min by taxi-- longer with public trans. close enough that you don't have to sweat getting back to the airport.

I wouldn't do the Getty Museum. Manhattan Beach is the better option. Head for the Pier for lunch options, visit the free little aquarium at the end of the pier, walk along the Strand and check out the zillion dollar homes, or rent a bike, walk the Valley Blvd. greenbelt back to Manhattan Village Mall (or reverse order depending on your shopping priorities). A taxi should run about $15 each way. You would want to prearrange the pickup to get back to the airport. There are also public transit options but all will involve at least one transfer so I'd go with a taxi.

If you have no luggage, you have lots of options. Take the Metro from the airport and you could be anywhere, even all the way to Long Beach.
Long Beach offer free bus service (Passport A, B, C & D) and make stops at various tourist attractions, inclduing beaches, Queen Mary, the Aquarium etc. They all connect to the Metro at the "terminal station".
You can download both the Metro and the Long Beach passport schedule to plan your time and stops.
