10 Days in Maine
We want to visit Maine in late September/ early October for about 10 days. This is our first trip to Maine. We will fly into Portland and we want to take a road trip up the coast. We want to definitely see Bar Harbor and Acadia....but we are looking for suggestions on other places to see. There are soooo many possibilities. Would we have to make hotel reservations (other than Bar Harbor) or could we find hotels in most of the small towns in late September? We are 55 and we like to walk and ride bikes. We want to enjoy the small towns & villages and find fun pubs/ restaurants.

Hi,
I live in southern Maine. You'll have a wonderful time during your ten days. Since you have 10 days, you might enjoy stopping in many of the coastal towns. Driving up route 1.... Bath,Camden, Rockland, Boothbay Harbor (don't miss the Coastal Botanical Gardens)Belfast,...most of them have something interesting to see. If you like maritime history, Bath has a nice Maritime museum. If you like hiking, Camden has Battie Mountain (about an hour hike) with a lovely view of the harbor. You can also take a sailing cruise from Camden, or Boothbay Harbor. Strolling around the towns is an interesting pastime in itself. If you're a shopper, Freeport is famous for LL Bean and other outlets. You'll love Bar Harbor and Acadia. That's your safest bet for biking, too. Ride the carriage trails for beauty and safety. And there are many, many trails with great views. Unfortunately, you'll have to share the road with autos most other times when biking, and believe me, I've done it... it's a bit tense. Don't forget Schoodic Point in Acadia. If you have time....south of Portland is Kennebunkport, Ogunquit, and York. I don't think at that time of year, you'll have too much trouble finding accommodations.
