10 days in California. What should I hit?

My wife and I want to celebrate our 10th anniversary by taking a California road trip in April/May.. We live in Indiana and the mountains and ocean both sound great to us. We are thinking 10 days and would like to hit Yosemite, San Fran, and Napa. Seeing Big Sur or some kind of dramatic coastline would also be neat. Suggestions? We have a pretty big budget so suggestions for B&B's, resorts, and great restaurants would also be appreciated. Thanks!

This is an appropriate routing: San Francisco, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Big Sur, San Simeon (Hearst Castle), Cambria, Paso Robles (wine district), Yosemite NP, Napa Valley, San Francisco (or vice versa).

I'm sorry I can't help with B&B's or great restaurants.

Book lodging at Yosemite as soon as possible.

I don't think Paso Robles is a must.

And there are so many great lodging and dining options in SF and Napa, I'd suggest searching here for previous discussions and maybe making a short list of things that sound good to you.

Also, it would be nice to know your budget in actual dollars--your idea of big might be bigger or smaller than mine, you never know.

You may need to schedule your itinerary on when you can get lodging in Yosemite, start working on that NOW. If everything is booked you may have to call daily to try and get a cancellation. I have also heard there are a few places in El Portal.
In Cambria there are a number of places on Moonstone Drive, we stayed at Sand Pebbles. In San Simeon we stayed at Best Western Cavalier. In Carmel we splurged for Highlands Inn.
Can't help with B&Bs, don't like them much.

For your San Francisco stay: Inn Above Tide in Sausalito. Looking across the bay to the city is breathtaking!

For Carmel: The Inn at Spanish Bay. Even if you don't end up staying here, go at sunset to hear the bagpiper and have a drink by the outdoor firepit.

For Yosemite: Lodging inside the park is preferred but you might want to check out the Blackberry Inn in Groveland, its a 15 minute drive into the park and its a lovely place to stay and is very convenient to the park.

Cambria and Paso Robles can be missed. The dramatic views and coastline are further north in the cities you've mentioned.

They would also "pass out" when they saw the "swimsuit optional" sign upon entering the Ventana pool area.

I don't think Paso Robles is a must.

When I drive from Cambria to Yosemite I always pass through Paso Robles. Is there a more direct route?

No. Hwy 46 to Hwy 41 is the route. You could go down to Morro Bay if you wanted to stay on the coast longer and then go up Hwy 41 from there, but that's a little longer route.

FYI, for anyone traveling now, Hwy 1 is closed between Ragged Point and Lucia. Hwy 41 is also closed. Both are due to mudslides and it's raining right now so there may be more.
