I'm going to Boston for business trip the end of May. I've never been to New England. My husband & I want to spend the week after Boston in either Vermont, New Hampshire or Maine (Bar Harbor). We prefer enjoying nature and being outdoors to the city scene or visiting too many historical sites. Can someone who's been to these states make a recommendation for which places to go, how much we should try to do within a week, lodging and restaurants? We are on a moderate budget, but we realize that is an expensive area. Thanks in advance!

We did all those states last fall. Being from Calif, I forget how small the east coast states are! First thing, check the Maine tourist web site. Send for their tourist package, but it takes about 2-3 weeks to get. I got hotels from that site. Also, I used the AAA tour book - lots of hotels moderately priced. Most hotels were $60-90. Bar Harbor was great - lobster dinners from $12.00. We stayed two nights, but could have stayed longer. Stayed at Main Street Motel, which was about 5 blocks from the main area of town, but only around $65.00/nite. Easy walk to all the shops and restaurants. Acadia Nat'l Park was great! NH was OK, buzzed through there in one day. VT much better. Be sure to take the scenic highway from boston. It hits all the coastal towns.

I've never been to Vermont or New Hampshire but highly recommend Maine. We preferred Southwest Harbor to Bar Harbor because it was quieter. We stayed at a great inn--the Kingsleigh (ask for the turret room). An excellent, down-home place for lobster is Thurston's. It's a working lobster pound and had the best lobster we've ever tasted. (Even people from Boston thought it was the best they'd ever had.)

Our favorite outings were those to Acadia National Park. The scenery was spectacular!
