1 night stop btwn Mt. Rushmore & Yellowstone - Buffalo or Cody?

Jump to last reply

We'll be leaving Mt. Rushmore on a Tuesday at the end of August and the plan was to stop for the night in Buffalo, Wyoming and stay at the Occidental Hotel. Then the next day we'd drive on over the Beartooth Highway to Yellowstone.

The only real reason for stopping in Buffalo was because I stayed at the Occidental when my daughter and I traveled that way in 2009 and I think my husband would enjoy it. Since we have no stops planned between Mt. Rushmore and Buffalo, we'd get there fairly early in the day. Is there anything to do there?

However, if we push on to Cody we would have a shorter drive into Yellowstone the next day and also we could get a look at the Buffalo Bill Historical center. We probably wouldn't be able to get into Cody earlier than 2:00 however and I see that the Buffalo Bill Historical Center closes at 6:00. The next morning we'd need to move on to Yellowstone since our time there is very limited. Is the Buffalo Bill Historical center worth doing if we only have a few hours? We are big history buffs and usually love museums.
