Travelex Insurance

I have a question....I'm going to Hawaii in February. The only reason that I'm really thinking about getting insurance is because I live in Iowa and I have a lay over in MN. If you know anything about IA or MN, there is always the chance of snow which could delay the trip. The Travelex insurance does cover for Trip delay(if the trip is delayed by 5hrs) and Missed connections(if you miss your connection by 3hrs). I notice that they put all of these little stipulations in there that I'm wondering if it's really even worth purchasing the insurance. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

You really have to read the actual policy/certificate for things like definition of "delay" and "missed connection" as they may not mean what you presume and check all exclusions. Depending on the policy, weather delays may be excluded or covered only if the entire airport is closed for 24 hours. And, those provisions vary from one policy to the next.

A "missed connection" often refers to your flight being delayed and you miss your cruise departure or tour departure, not necessarily a connecting flight. Terms mean different things in different policies.

Missing a connection by 3 hours makes no sense!

Best bet is to go to www.insuremytrip.com and study individual policies (most are available prior to purchase). Note that sometimes terms are different due to laws in your state (to your benefit), which are listed at the end or the certificate is specific to where you live.

Since you are primarily concerned about weather delays, just make sure they are not excluded.

Note that if you think you might be delayed overnight due to weather cancellation, be sure to book a nearby hotel room that you can cancel. If flights are being cancelled due to weather, all the hotels will be full.

It's also important to pay attention to the documentation required to submit a claim, which is often easier to acquire during your travels than once home.

Our flight was cancelled due to weather once and the claim required a letter from the carrier - and the only way to get that was writing a letter (no phone, no e-mail) and waiting for it. But, it was returned quickly and the claim was successfully processed quickly.

For big ticket trips like yours, we always get a policy from Travel Guard to cover things like this. I'd recommend calling them in person and asking direct questions about what you want to covered to be sure it is. All of the travel insurance policies are difficult to pin down by looking online, but we've had very good results with Travel Guard's customer service and it's well worth the extra couple hundred bucks to ensure you are covered for an investment like this trip. Have a wonderful time!

When deciding whether to purchase trip insurance, you really have to decide what your financial risk is versus the cost of insurance.

When your plane is delayed and you miss your connection or if your flight is cancelled due to weather, the airline will put you on another flight. No charge there. You may have expenses related to the delay though - food, lodging. If you arrive at your destination a day later, you might have costs - a night at your hotel or vacation rental that you may have to pay for, first day activities that you pre-booked, and that sort of thing.

I'd run the numbers before deciding whether I needed the insurance.

Yes, the airline will put you on another flight - but when? When flights are heavily booked, the next flight could be days later and, then what will you do, where will you stay? When many flights are cancelled due to weather, even travel insurance cannot get you into a hotel when they're all booked by others experiencing cancelled flights and delays.

And, you may find it's much more economical to purchase trip cancellation/delay insurance from the airline, rather than a policy "for an extra couple hundred bucks" with coverage you won't need/use.

Our policy through Continental (AccessAmerica) was under $50. And, our claim was around $200.
