Do you have any preference in activities available? For example, do you want to experience a big party for New Year's or do you want something quieter and more relaxed?

Outside of the actual night, do you have any other interests that we can base an answer on?

I am in Washington, DC. Big party or more relaexed... you ask...well honestly I am flexible enough to do either. The only thing about a big party is that if it is all couples I certainly would not fit in. That is why I mentioned maybe single group travel or something. I would like to be somewhere where I can do some sightseeing, enjoy the location outside of the hotel with no sense of fear and be comfortable. I am a very social person and enjoy just having fun. (FYI I am late 40's so not looking for somewhere where I am dealing with 20 yr olds). If it is a relaxing location then that is fine as long as there is a little fun going on esp for the big night.

If you want warm, how about one of the Carribean islands? You'll probably find the big parties at the resorts and if you want a more spiritual happening, you could find a nice quiet spot along the beach to think back on the previous year and think ahead to the next.

For snow, you have many choices: Alps, Rockies, etc. Again, a resort could provide you with both options of "action packed" or "quiet reflection".

I have had nice solo trips to Puerto Vallarta Mexico that/this time of year, but it might be a little late to get something booked as it's a very popular time to travel.

Miz,

If you haven't found anything yet, I'm looking for someone to share a cabin on Easy Cruise. (You actually don't have to sail the exact same dates, you can join me later and leave sooner as people can embark and disembark at any port.)
Easy Cruise is a cruise ship by Stelios who started Easy Jet in Europe. It's basically a hotel room on water, cruising to the islands in the Carribean, the cost is cheap because you're not paying for food or entertainment or daily maid service (which you can have if you pay extra-but you can use all facilities of the ship including the hot tub!) The cost for a one week cruise from Antigua starts at $138 per person-2 people sharing probably an inside cabin. You stay longer in the ports, to shop, eat, drink whatever. If it's shorter, it runs about $33 a day (guess it's a little higher than booking the week.)

Ideally, I'd like to go from Dec. 28 to Jan. 3 because it's short notice and those our the days air fares may be lowest, but if I can't get anyone to come those days I'm flexible. (I'd like to celebrate the New Year elsewhere!)

This is their website

If you or anyone else is reading this please let me know.

thanks for the invite and info. I actually started looking at cruises & found one I posted on here about but now my family & friends have discouraged me from a cruise because of all the recent (sickness) outbreaks that have been happening. So I have decided to stay away from the cruises.

Note to Fodorites: I am still looking for suggestions and time is running out. Can you suggest some "safe" female travel locations?

Here's an unusual way to ring out 2006 and ring in 2007. But you have to like manatees. It's almost like a cruise.

I'll be at this location alone during part of your travel time. And I've been there before--alone--to know it is safe.

Crystal River in Florida is about 2 hours from Tampa with a Best Western right next door to Bird's Underwater Dive Shop. That's where you can go out every morning (or as many mornings as you wish) very early on a 15-passenger boat to look for the manatees that come in from the ocean seeking warmer water. Then you snorkel with them if you want. Some manatees ignore the snorkelers and some prefer the off limits areas where no people are allowed. But many of them come up to you so you can scratch them. The babies are especially playful.

Later in the day you can rent a kayak and go out on your own to look for manatees and snorkel if you wish. You can also do some bird watching with egrets, herons, cormorants, pelicans, etc.

Bird's rents all the gear and has crew members snorkel with guests in the river.

Each snorkel trip is around $30 and the hotel is a little over $100 per night.

Personally, I can't wait.

Not sure how you'd spend New Years Eve. I'm not planning on staying that long. I also don't know about the night life since I went to bed early in order to get up about 4:30 or so for the early manatee departures.

Good luck in whatever you choose and have fun.
