Waze and Google are essentially the same thing. Google bought Waze last year. The only difference at this point is that Waze looks cooler

My top travel apps
Traverse App (Save places you go and discover new places + tips from friends)
Google Maps (directions are great and best search)
Kayak (only use it for car rentals but it rocks there)

I use T-Mobile, and turn off a lot of background stuff. Doubt that such an app exists.

When you say apps, do you mean phone apps or web apps? Since you mentioned National Rail, I highly recommend "Captain Train", at least for France and Italy and I think a few other countries. The story of how those guys sued the France rail company to get access to their data is really interesting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Train

Oh, to answer searchmaster's question, there are mapping programs you can get that don't use any data because they download all the map data ahead of time. But they're expensive and take up a lot of memory. Aside from that, use wifi whenever you can.

What about roaming apps to save phone bills?

Obviously, apps like Expedia and Air Sharing, to book hotels and plane tickets. Also, weather forecast apps : http://forecast.io/ Some kind of map, Google Maps or something that builds on it, allows you to plot a route and calculate the distance, for example: http://en.cutway.net/distance/40-41/ There are many similar road map apps like that, choose what you like. For finding interesting places locally, you can use Foursquare. In terms of sharing and proving once and for all and that you have existed and traveled, I am not original and use Instagram.

Hi, thanks for the question. There are many travel apps which are easy-to-use and provide real convenience to the user. For eg: Duolingo is one such app that helps you escape the language trouble if you are travelling to another country. Likewise, an app called Ajura is too good for your wallet. It slashes the international mobile roaming charges to a good extent; https://www.ajura.com/
Another good app is Foodspotting which helps you find your favorite dishes when you search for a restaurant offering your likeable cuisine.

Well, I use it, but I am ready to agree that I can be somewhat slow on the uptake, or clingy.
