Rome and amalfi coast
Hi everyone,
I am planning a trip to Italy in mid august next year and would love to spend a couple of days in Rome and the maybe drive the coast down to amalfi? We are complete Italian novices and so any advice would be appreciated
Thanks
Rob

robcuff - of course you could fly into Rome, spend a couple of days there, and then drive down the coast to Amalfi.
but how are you with heat? how long have you got for your trip? and what is it you are looking for from your holiday in Italy?
perhaps rather than drive, you could fly into Rome, get the train to Naples and then take a boat to Amalfi, stay there for a few days, then get a boat to Sorrento and use that as a base to see Pompeii, Capri, Positano etc. Then catch the train back to Naples and thence to Rome. Then if you are flying back home from Rome, you will be in the right place for getting to the airport at the end of your trip, rather than perhaps splitting up your stay which is an inefficient use of your time.
but all this rather depends on how long you've got, etc.

First, you will get many more responses if you post your question on the "Europe" forum, tagged for Italy.
Second, a good guidebook or two should prove extremely useful to you.
Third, as annhig says, do take the heat into consideration as you plan.
Italy is very easy to visit IME. Enjoy!

Thank you all so very much. This is the first time I have ever done this sort of thing and I am amazed at how you have come back so quickly and your great advice.
since my message I have been busy but not sure if I have done the right thing!!!
I want the visit to be very special and have booked a week in a room with sea view in Positano. It was expensive but my thoughts were that we would have a base and could travel to Capri, Pompeii etc.. from there. I want it to be very romantic.
You mention the heat!! That worries me a little. We are going in mid August.

robcuff - being by the coast will help and i hope that your hotel, as well as having a room with a view also has a pool and air conditioning.
a good tip is to do as the locals do and rise early, do your chosen activity for the day in the morning, have a long lunch followed by a siesta, and then go out again in the evening. and try not to be too ambitious, particularly early in your trip.
You can use the search function on this board to look for trip reports from people who have been to Positano - I'm pretty sure that there's quite a recent one.

Unfortunately . . . The main problem is the search function won't bring up recent threads. The data base hasn't been indexed for several months so a search will only identify entries from before about last March or April and before.

Hi robcuff,
i found just the same problem that jj mentions when trying to find the thread that I was talking about, but luckily I found it pretty quickly amongst my current threads:

if you scroll down to Sept 21st, you'll find the bit about Positano.
