I'm going to Orlando in the fall, and discovered that the rental car rates are outrageous, regardless of which company you go with. However, I've also learned there are services that offer cars at 50% of what the big name places charge. (Which is to say, their prices are what I'd expect to pay if I was renting a car at home.) I just wondered if anyone has ever used one of these services and if they are reputable. Also, I'm curious how it works -- for example, if I book through them, where do I go to pick up the car?

No idea, but did you check Enterprise? I always find them pretty reasonable, and they pick you up and drop you off.
Enterprise would give me a full-size car for what breaks down to $60 a day. While that seems good for Orlando, it seems crazy to pay that much for a rental car. Anywhere else, it would be about $30. I found several sites where I can get a 50% discount. The first one didn't appeal to me, but I've found two more (they're like Expedia, but strictly for cars) that seem promising.
Did you try hotwire? You won't know which car company, but presumably that doesn't matter. I've used them a couple of times for car rental.
Also, can you arrive in Florida somewhere else, with cheaper rates, and drive to Florida? Where are you traveling from?
Aargh. Of course, that should have said, drive to Orlando!
We've used priceline for rental cars quite a few times and been very satisfied.
how can people give you advice on these places if you don;t say which ones they are?
