I'm not sure how things are where you reside, but no matter where I am, I would never leave valuables in my vehicle and a bike on the rear overnight and expect said valuables and bike (or even, sometimes, the vehicle) to still be there in the morning.

Thefts happen in the best of neighborhoods, and think about this: you're not willing to leave your car with a bike at a train station, so why would you leave it on a NYC street or in a parking garage?

If you really want to visit your friend, be prepared to empty out the car, and take your things into the apartment.

I agree with mscleo, but you should repost this on the United States board, and specify roughly where in New York. There may be secure parking garages someone knows about.
