Mineral Makeup?

I guess this is a good topic for my first question posted to the Lounge. I am curious about mineral makeup. I don't much like to wear makeup (as my former sisterIL once said, "personal grooming is such a drag&quot and I always spend way too much time thinking about makeup when I do wear it, such as special occasions and travel.

I have seen the infomercials and it looks amazing, but doesn't everything on infomercials?

So does anyone recommend mineral makeup, or has anyone used it and would not recommend it?

I would like to know which brands are best, if it is recommended. And how much to buy? There seems to be many steps; what is best and what is the best and easiest way to use it?

Thanks

Hi tuscanlifeedit!

Welcome to the lounge! Can I get you a drink? Hee hee!

Ive been waiting to reply to your question with hopes that someone with a bit more experience with this would post but, to get things started, Ill go ahead and share with you what Ive found with mineral make up!

A few years ago I tried Physicians Formula which was the first time Id heard of mineral make up. I loved the way it felt-sort of moist and tingly! Unfortunately, it didnt work for my skin and I broke out every time I used it.

Recently, after seeing a billion infomercials on mineral make up (“swirl it with your brush, tap of the excess”) I decided to try a different brand. I got Neutrogeana Mineral Sheers (http://tinyurl.com/y6pmtd) about a month ago but I dont like it. Its supposed to act as a foundation but, on my skin at least, its more of just like a light powder. It doesnt feel nearly as good (moist and tingly) as Physicians Formula did. I gave all my Physicians Formula products away since I couldnt use them or else Id tell you exactly which items I had in case you wanted to try them!

I cant find anything about it on their website but Rite Aid used to advertise that you could return make up you purchase from them if it turns out you dont like it after you use it. Maybe this would be something to consider so you could try different brands and see what works best for you (I imagine that most brands now carry some form of the mineral make up).

My husband works for QVC and he told me they sell mineral make up (Bare Escentuals):
http://bareescentuals.qvc.com/

You could try that and return it if you dont care for it (everything from QVC is returnable). Its a bit more expensive (than, say, the stuff at the drug store) but maybe it would be worth it!?

I guess products will work differently depending on skin type, etc, but if you find something that you like, please share!!

I know this isnt much but hopefully itll provide a bit of insight until more knowledgeable members can post!!

Have a great night!

I use Bare Escentuals and I love it. You can get a starter kit at Sephora that has everything you need, including the brushes for $60! It's a really good deal - if you price the brushes alone they are $70. Also it's made by md Formulations - the only face care line that I have found that doesn't cause breakouts.

I started using mineral makeup after seeing so many infomercials. I don't use Bare Escentuals, though.
I decided to check into mineral makeup as I am a "research" kind of person. I read all I could and decided to try an off brand because it didn't contain one ingredient, bismuth, I think, that can make your face look shiny. There are less steps to the brand I use and it costs less. It is called aromaleigh. Go to aromaleigh.com
I have been really happy with it. I don't like the feel or look of regular foundation and this provides the perfect coverage. It is great for humid weather, too. My neighbor had bought bare escentuals and then tried this brand and preferred it. You can order samples very inexpensively from the company to see if you like it. It lasts a really long time. It is a one step process, not 3, like some other brands. I use a natural brush to apply it but have also used a make up sponge.
I hope this helps

Mine says on it "I.D. Bare Minerals" & I think I got it at QVC but not certain.

I can really vouch for it. I have super sensitive skin & this stuff is great. You use VERY little of it so it lasts a long time. If you overdo it you look like floured biscuit dough. You need to really buff it in with the brush.

I use Glominerals. They are so pure, they can be applied even directly after laser or electrology. Their site is www.glominerals.com. They suggest a wonderful little bottle of hydration mist which really sets the makeup. Hope this helps.

L"Oreal has a new line of Mineral makeup that I love. It's perfect in the summer to even out the skin tones after a day in the sun, it feels light on the skin. Also my skin is very sensitive, and I had no problem with breakouts. It also comes in a wider variety of shades than some of the others, my skin is very pale and the others just didn't suit me.

Also, the L'Oreal is only about 12$ a lot less than the stuff on QVC or the infomercial.

My daughter-in-law told me about it originally. She is only 26. She wore NO makeup before, now uses Bare Minerals- Bare Essentials. She just looks great, doesn't look like she is wearing foundation; skin looks perfect.

So I tried it after using various liquid sunscreens, some with foundation color during the last decade. At almost 60 years old, foundation that is liquid- regardless of expense- tends to looks more like a mask. I used a Estee Lauder very sheer for a year and at least it kept the UV off and did even and improve the light reflection, but not as well as Bare Essentials does.

I LOVE Bare Essentials- and it really does look as if you are not wearing makeup, but your skin just looks much better. I think it's only downside is that it does not cover slight age spots as well as a concealer. I have those right under my brows from uv exposure/sun.

I bought the $60 kit at our local ULTA II- a large makeup and beauty supply distributor. I used the light- first level.

It's hard for me to find correct makeup shades, as I am very (under blue they call it)light skinned and almost all makeup appears too yellow. It is sometimes called redhead skin.

When I was young I broke out every month- and now- I have nice skin but have spent a ton of $$ on moisturizers and facial skin products. DRY DRY DRY- can't stand how dry. And some of the best will make me break out. Clinique makes me break out, Mary Kay except for the night emolient. Proactiv makes me peel like a grape. Any Anew Avon product is like an instant breakout for me. Their hydrate 24 hour is soothing and works. I've gotten some at Field's for $70 that I could not use more than once. GGGRRRRR!

Concealers too. I need a creme, not a powder, not a stick. I absolutely love Studio Gear and buy it online. If they quit making it, I will cry.

I think the key to mineral OR liquid is where you highlight. Different people need to do it in a different spot re face shape etc. And that they do not show you on the infomercial. They just show you putting the last Mineral Veil all over. Not! You should just highlight with that one. That's what the makeup pros do.

The girl on "What not to Wear" who does the makeup KNOWS how to highlight. If you do that with a mineral that reflects light correctly- you are 1/2 way to the infomercial result. Under the brow, in the inner tear duct spot and at the edge of the cheekbone where it meets your eye socket. That is different for different women.

Bare minerals have never caused me to break out. And it also has cut my makeup time from about 10 minutes to about 4 or 5.

JJ5, you just described my skin and my skin problems. I never knew I had redhead hair, but it figures - for many reasons! ;-)

Thanks so much for this good, insightful information! I have searched and searched, and wasted LOTS of money, for something that doesn't yellow me out and doesn't looked caked on over my nearly transparent skin. (Sounds yukko, huh? LoL) I am going to buy this as soon as I can get to a store that has it!

I have really dry skin as well, which gets really bad this time of year. I recently picked up some "Hope in a Jar" from Philosophy, and I LOVE it. It kind of smells funky, but it works amazingly well for me. Not too greasy, but has kept my skin from molting off!

I have very fair and sensitive skin so its always hard to find something good that doesnt cause my face to turn into this for a few days:

I love Bare Escentuals but have switched to one sold by the place where I get my facials. It is supposed to be the original mineral make-up and now the full name escapes me but the last name is Ireland. I only switched cause I could get a better color match. I've found that the way to use it as a concealer is to take a tiny brush and spot cover the bad places and then use the big brush to buff the rest in. I have very fair pinky skin and it really does the trick for me. I love it.

I love Bare Minerals Bare Essentuals or whatever the brand name is.

My girlfriends however use the original by Jane Iredale and swear by it and that it is much better than Bare Minerals.

I think it is only sold in spas so it is tough to find.

Thanks Naturegirl and everyone! I will try the Aveeno. It sounds like the kind of products I would use most often and in large quantities. LOL!

That's exactly it- the products that so many others RAVE about- just "bump me" up within 48 hours. I love Susan Lucci's defoiliating machine technique, as it works, but not the creams. Break out.

The Avon 24 hour hydrating does not- it just moisturizers gently, and it is NOT greasy. Also (and I will not tell you what a big jar of this costs) the Estee Lauder Night Cleansing Moisturizer is wonderful- will not make you break out. Even my daughter will not break out with this.
But it is very expensive.

My 89 year old Aunt had marvelous skin, was Marshal Field's consultant and left me 3 jars of the later. Really, she had just gone to get her employee discount, and I am almost out.

Put a crying face here.
