Japan vs. California vs. Hawaii
Hello,
I know the topic is kind of vague, but let me explain. June 2015 will be my husband's and my 10 year anniversary. I want to do it up pretty big. 10 years is a long time!!
So, I had an idea to travel back to Japan. we went about 5 years ago and I fell in love. More than I already was.
But then, another plane went down. My husband is already scared of flying to begin with so, this just put more fear into him. Also, he stated he can only use some many PTO days. He only gets 10 days. So he said he can use about 8 ( not including weekends).
With all that said, I told him I would find some places I could/would go on a compromise. I came with California and Hawaii. California, because I heard Japantown is really nice and it would be like Japan but not really *tear* and Hawaii because.... not really sure. It's pretty. I've never really had the urge go to Hawaii.
My question to all of you is, are California or Hawaii worth the trip? Or should I just say, we're going to Japan and call it day? Adding this stuff in: - My husband doesn't like to swim and doesn't like seafood. I, love to swim and love seafood. We both like Technology and Asian inspired things.
Which trip would you take if you were me?

Japantown in San Francisco is really quite small. I would not go there thinking it was a substitute for Japan. You can get more input on both Hawaii and California on the US board. I would think California would be more likely to satisfy both of you, but I am no expert on either place.

Where does he want to go? I assume it is not all about you . . .
If flying over water unsettles him, Hawaii would be no easier than Japan.
What sorts of things do the two of you enjoy? Where are you traveling from?
As thrusdaysd says, you'll get more 'eyes' if you re-post on the United States forum.

I LOVE Hawaii. So that's where I would go. I grew up in California, so for me it's just not that big a deal.
But (like janisj mentions) I don't see the different between flying to Hawaii and flying to Japan, quite honestly, as far as your husband's fears seems like they'd be the same for both trips.
Where are you starting from? Where does he want to go?

Yes. it is not all about me. I just seem to be the one throwing all these places around. He's very hard to read, if that makes sense. he says, he will be happy just as long as I'm there. Very hard to plan when you get answers like that. But I'm trying. I think what really gets him is the duration of the flight.
We are coming from Columbus, GA. small town.
Let me add, that we went to Japan in 2010-- he was still scared of flying but he did well on the flight.
The husband and I like technology, gaming, cartoons, ( I saw there was a cartoon museum in California , I love animation. I figured Burbank would be nice too to see some animation stuff.
We both love anime and manga ( him more than I). He loves computers and I love animals. This seems like it's hard to decide.
I thank you guys for your responses so far. I'm sorry if I sound vague. I do appreciate all your help. I will also repost this in the US travel section of the foum.

if you go to the SF Bay Area go for its many incredible places, but not because of Japantown.Yuck.
You say he doesn't like to swim. i don't much like to swim, but i LOVE sitting under a tree on a beautiful beach. Would he be happy doing that? if NOT, i'd skip Hawaii and the Caribbean, which are very much about beautiful scenery including stunning beaches.
How do you mean, you are into "Technology "? What about New York City??? Perhaps you'd like the fast pace. The question is , what especially about Japan did you love?? Scenery? Chaos? Ask yourself what appealed most, and that might help you find an alternative.
Otherwise, i'm with SeeHag. Just GO to Japan. Have some wine on board and hopefully he'll sleep through the long flight!

I would suggest just doing Japan. You know you love it and if you take a flight from an airline known to you, you should be okay. I think the joy you would experience would be well worth the slight stress over just the flight. I am sure you both will be fine, as the flights you can take to Japan would be of a higher quality than the ones that went down.
