I made reservations at a Westin in Tucson through Orbitz and I'd like to ask for an upgrade. What should be my approach? Should I wait until we arrive or should I call ahead? Thank you for any advice.

If you're a member of frequent stay/flyer program, you could call now. If not, we've have better success asking at checkin.
It never hurts to ask at check-in. We stayed at an Embassy Suites last month - booked online for $89 (all in) for the night. We choose the least expensive room category (not even a suite.) I noticed the hotel had a honeymoon suite, but the price was too much for us.
When we were checking in I overheard a conversation that mentioned the hotel was only 60% booked for that night. So, I mentioned to the check-in person that I heard they had a honeymoon suite and asked what it would cost to upgrade to it if it was avaiable. After all - we were celebrating our wedding anniversary - true! She checked and said it was available, and that she could upgrade us for free! WOW! And it was great! A large suite with a jacuzzi tub in the bedroom! And after we had checked in, the manager sent a bottle of champagne and a plate of chocolate-covered strawberries to our suite - "on the house." Again - it never hurts to ask.

There use to be a thread on here called the $20.00 dollars something or other. It was about giving clerk $20.00 when approaching the counter. It worked for us in Vegas. We got a room with view of Bellagio fountains.
