My husband and I want to travel to Northern Italy to the small towns of
Pont and Locana. We are flying in and out of Rome and need some ideas
for an itinerary. We want to see the Vatican and the towns his family are from
and would like to know when to rent the car and how many days to travel?
We have allowed 16 days for the trip...

You will get more answers if you post this on the Europe board.
Although I can't provide an good schedule for you, I can say that driving in Italy can be rough. It's one thing to be out on the country roads and highways, but city driving is chaotic at best. You may be just fine, but if you're the least bit timid when driving, then it's not a good idea. There are plenty of trains and buses that could get you to where you want to go and there is a major train station in Rome where you can start from. Hope that helps. P.S., Don't go down to Naples, not a safe area to wander around.
I am planning a big trip to Italy this fall. Venice, Florence, Radda in Chianti, Spoleto, and Rome. We are planning to use both the train and car. We will arrive in Rome and immediately take a train to Venice. From Venice, we will take the train to Florence. On our way out of Florence, we will rent a car in order to have greater flexibility to see the countryside as well as get to and from places such as Assisi, Radda (vineyards), and Spoleto. Finally we will drive into Rome to drop off the car.
Either drop off the car while in a city, or I have read that many cities and towns have parking lots on the outskirts where you can leave the car. It is my understanding that you don't want a car in Venice, Florence, Rome, Milan or most cities or towns - at least not in the city center. We have our lodging, air, and car reservations for a Sept trip. The train will not accommodate booking this far in advance.
I can't speak to the towns you are traveling to, but we are planning 13 days which will give us a few days each in Venice and Florence, a few days total to see other sites in Tuscany and Umbria, and 5 days in Rome. So 16 days sounds good.
If you are a AAA member, the rates for Hertz are better than most any other site.
finally, I like the Fodor's travel books best. They are informative, have a lot of pictures, and are well organized. Have fun!
