Egypt Jewelry

An Egyptian in Aswan asked a jeweler how much it would cost for a gold carteuche with a four letter first name in English and the name in hieroglyphics on the back. He said it is 305 LE per gram available from 3 to 20 grams. Is that expensive? What is the average weight for a four letter carteuche in gold? What is the average cost of a gold carteuche? Are Americans subject to raised prices when it comes to gold in Egypt? I have traveled to Egypt before, but a carteuche I had was stolen in the US and pawned. I would like to purchase another, but I am not certain about cost. Would it be more advantageous to go there to purchase it myself or have someone there purchase it and send it to me. Please forgive my naivete about such things. Also is Egypt a safe place to go right now?

Persistent - You asked this back in sept. and no one responded. There are better places to get gold prices than on a travel board.

In any case, it belongs on the Africa board, not here.

And anyone shopping in Egypt had better be a good bargainer, whatever their nationality.

Her earlier thread was on the Africa board.

if you want to replace your jewelry and have a trustworthy friend, then have the friend order the item for you and figure out how you will have it paid for and shipped. Gold is sold by the weight in many countries, and the price fluctuates. You can check the exchange rate for the currency and can also check the market price for gold per ounce.

I would not recommend traveling to Egypt solely to replace this item. It is not particularly safe for women travelers, especially Americans and Europeans. For more information go to the State Department's website and read about safety and security.
