I'm travelling to East Glacier by train and will arrive the second week in June. I'll be with my 3 year old daughter, my 12 year old son, a friend and her 6 year old son, and my friend's parents. We plan to rent cars and drive to Yellowstone, where we have hotel reservations for three nights. We plan to hike a little (>2 miles at a time), sight-see, maybe catch a ghost town--we're pretty open. I'd appreciate suggestions about what to do on our trip, and what things I should pack--I'm an inexperienced traveller and have never been to Montana. Thanks!!

Do you have passports (or probably other forms to prove US citizenship)? While you are at Glacier, a side trip up to Waterton Lakes (essentially the Canadian half of Glacier) is worth the trip. We found smaller crowds and more wildlife on the Canada side. The more stunning scenery is in Glacier.
We have found two pretty good ghost towns, one in Southwest Montana and one near Banff in Canada. I can't recall their names but they're both pretty far from Yellowstone. Hiking and viewing wildlife are our favorite activities.
The kids would probably enjoy horseback riding, there are also free guided nature hikes that the park rangers conduct that help you learn about the area. In Waterton there is an AM radio frequency that broadcasts information about the area.
