Do you use Yelp or Foursquare when traveling abroad?

I'm looking for the best way to find new places outside of the country and keep track of the places I go with personal tips. Has anyone found Yelp or Foursquare to be helpful?

I occasionally use Yelp. I never use Foursquare. I still use - gasp - guidebooks. And, if you mean restaurants, my eyes.

I found Yelp that saving my paces on Yelp is too hard and I can't share my places with people. I've used Google Maps before but then leaving tips/photos and sharing it is a pain again.

What do you like about guidebooks?

"What do you like about guidebooks?"

Lots of info and easy to use.

I don't need to save places on Yelp, if I want to remember something I use Note on my iPad, or add it to the spreadsheet I use for my itineraries.

I don't either of those.

I use Trip Advisor and Fodor's forums, sometimes along with hard-copy guidebooks and travel magazines for trip planning.

Then I keep track of places I've been and tips by writing a small journal on each one (carry a 3x5" spiral notebook and a pen) and collecting business cards, etc. in a plastic sleeve and file them together after the trip.

We used YELP in Rome a couple of times when our dinner plans were abandoned, turned out very well.
