Do liquids HAVE to be in a quart size baggie?

Do liquids HAVE to be in a quart size baggie?
It says on the TSA website that all 3 oz. liquids must be in a quart size baggie, not a little fold over sandwich baggie and not a gallon size baggie. Thing is I only have those two and not a quart size one. Do I REALLY have to go out and buy a box of quart size baggies just so I can use one for my trip? Will they not allow my liquids on if they are in a gallon size one?

You know the 3 oz. liquids rule only applies to what you carry-on the plane, right? If you check a suitcase you can put whatever size whatever you want in it.
If you are going carry-on only, then yes you want to use a single quart-size ziplock bag... which you remove from your bag and put in the bin with your shoes to send thru x-ray at security check points.
Definitely worth the price of a box of baggies to have your ducks in a row at security.

In addition to holding the liquids, you can also use the quart size baggies to hold your undies, power cords, etc. to help organize your stuff. Put some snacks in a few for the plane trip. Before you know it, the bags will be all used and you'll be looking for more.

Quart baggies are how I organize my paperwork too. Perfect size for airline and hotel confirmation paperwork, to stick lose receipts, business cards of shops, restaurants, hotels, etc. I come home with a couple neat little packets of information, easy to label and store after the trip.

Mapper71 - I also did not want to buy an entire box of quart size baggies but in the trial size aisle at Target I found a package with I think 4-5 quart size baggies, specifically geared towards travelers - I think the package even referenced something about TSA approved. Try looking in the trial size aisles at various stores and you might find the same! Good luck!

Not only they have to be in a zip bag, they MUST be in one!
The good news is, in the major airports, they provide them for free, and they seem to be a little bigger then the regular zip sandwich bags.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Mapper71 was concerned with having to pay for an entire box, but just having an entire box after needing only one. I can see the poster's point. Not everyone needs a particular size baggie around their house and the rest of the box may go unused. I don't see the point in posting to someone's question if you aren't going to be helpful in answering their question. JMO.

I saw Bed Bath & Beyond had a kit including various-sized empty plastic containers, labels, within a quart sized heavy weight ziplock for $9.99. You'd put your own products into each, be very organized, and for sure allowable.

And, when they say 3 ounces they mean it the max size of the container. You can't carry on a half full 6oz. container and try to argue that it's only 3oz. inside since it's only half full. They'll make you throw it out.
Put anything you want in checked luggage, but for carry on you have to follow the rules.
To go TSA.gov.
Some airports hand quart baggies out at security if you don't have the right size, BUT I would not rely on that.
Get the generic brand from some grocery store.

I keep a couple of the required quart size bags tucked into my suitcase when I put it away, so I'll always have one handy when it's time to pack for travel.
Keep it tucked in the carry on bag after arriving at destination, so it's handy if needed on the return home.

It doesn't just have to be a ziplock but it has to be quart size. I bought two "TSA approved" clear platic toiletry bags from Pitotubes. They are beautiful with great silver piping, have a super heavy duty zipper, and quite frankly, I don't know who tested this but it appears to be much larger than a quart. However, it's clearly stamped on the front, "TSA Approved 1 Quart". Maybe it's the way it's designed with a wide bottom whereas a ziplock has a flat bottom, but you can cram twice as much stuff in here. Did I mention how great the zipper is?
