Howdy.. I've been using my first 'smart phone' (Blackberry) for a few months, and will be taking it to Europe (GSM /freq capable). I've used my other cell in Europe before, but it wasn't a smartphone. So - - want to make sure I understand more about data usage when roaming, vs. wifi, etc.
I will call Sprint soon and discuss that I want to use the phone internationally. I believe I will go into 'Manage Connections' and select "Off" for both 'Data' and 'Roaming' the day we depart for Europe.
I want to be able to make/receive phone calls and send/receive text messages. My understanding is these services do not involve 'data' but will be priced at different scale outside of my US plan.
I want to be able to send/receive email and believe I must wait for wifi hotspot to do this to avoid 'data' usage. (I will need to go to my internet email site -not- the 'messages' area on my phone)
I want to be able to use the Internet and understand I must use wifi to avoid charges.
Lastly, to use any 'apps' stored on my phone
- - if they use GPS they won't work b/c I will have 'data' and 'roaming' turned off ?
(ex. any Maps utilities)
- - if they connect with Internet they won't work unless I'm logged into a wifi site b/c I will have 'data' and 'roaming' turned off?
Am I 'getting' it? Thanks!
Data and Roaming - some clarification for 'newby'

OK -- you may get some response here. But I'd really consider re-posting on the Europe board. This type of question (Cell phones/carriers/calling plans/text) come up all the time and there are several real experts posting there who to my knowledge have never even peeked in on Travel Tips, let alone posted here.
Europe is MANY times busier/more active than Travel Tips/Trip Ideas.
Yeah I think I will.... didn't want to in the 'wrong' place..
