Checked through luggage - 2 separate bookings?
Good morning: I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with getting their bags checked all the way through to their final destination? We had a change of plans and added another leg to our trip and, thus, ended up with two separate bookings Milan-London London-Philadelphia. There is 3 1/2 hours between the flights - same terminal at Heathrow. If we don't think there will be time to get our luggage and check in for the London - Philly flight we will do carry on. Thanks,

If you have two separate tickets it is unlikely that your bags will be checked through (interlined in airline jargon), although they might be if the tickets are on the same airline. If one flight is on a budget airline it is not just unlikely, it won't happen.
If you don't have to change terminals at LHR you should be OK. You will get more replies if you post on the Airlines forum and tell us which airlines you are flying.
Whether you can do carry-on depends on the size of your bags and the rules of the airline.

Which airlines? Could make a BIG difference.
IF the originating flight from Milan is on BA fuggedaboutit - they won't interline (for separate bookings) even to one of their partner airlines. None of the budget carriers will interline. And the terminals at LHR are very VERY far apart so some connections are easier than others.
So - which airlines and which terminals?
