Hi Segrab,

I haven't driven into Mexico from the States, but I don't think that's much of a problem.

We drove from Cancun on the main Yucatan highway south to Tulum, and planned on going all the way down to Belize. But the rental car had a problem and couldn't go more than 100km on the tank of gas. The gas stations are pretty far apart once you get south of Tulum, so make sure your car can go the distance. The roads get quite bumpy and narrow, but we found the drivers courteous.

Good luck!

There certainly are issues for drivng from the US into Mexico, but they are tolerable. It's been a very long time since the last time I drove beyond the 12-mile zone into Mexico, but here's what I encountered:

When driving into Mexico make sure to bring the registration and/or title for your car. You will have to stop at the bridge and show registration to get a permit to take the car beyond the 12-mile checkpoint. Additionally, you will need to purchase auto insurance, as the insurance you have is only good 12 miles into Mexico. (verify that with your agent) I don't know about driving into Belize, but I strongly suggest checking with their consolate/Embassy first. You don't want to make such a long drive only to have problems.

Disclaimer: As I stated above, this is not current info. It might be wise to check with the Mexican consolate.

Thanks for the reply. I just got back from my trip I was gone 4 months south in Mexico an Belize. I had no trouble getting around Belize, Mexico was another thing. In Mexico you have to be prepared to pay the police a bribe at most of the road blocks not much $5 to $10 usd. I took it as just paying a toll. Be nice and just let them look through your stuff I never had a thing stolen they put everything back where it was.Just be nice.I will do it again. I would also be willing to drive other peoples cars down for them,if needed.

Several years ago I spent five months traveling solo--well, with my bichon frise--through Mexico; then the next year two months traveling through Baja. I was in a small camper and though the police searched the camper at most road blocks, I never ever gave anyone any money. They did sometimes ask for cookies or candy!
