Best place for a solo traveler to find a travel partner

Hey guys-I will be traveling solo to Asia (probably Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Bali) in August or September. I would prefer to travel with someone, so I am surfing the Internet to find a site where I can find someone else possibly interested in the same travel plans. I have really only checked out travelbuddies.com, but I don't find it very easy to navigate/use. Have you guys used any "find a travel buddy" websites? Any advice/suggestions?

I would not travel with someone I "met" on the internet.

I would not go on a long trip with someone unless I had at least done a test trip with them.

I travel solo and enjoy it. I do an occasional tour. However, if you are going to SEA and want to meet fellow travelers, get Lonely Planet guidebooks and stay in the cheap places.

I'm a 39 year-old guy who has done a lot of international travel, just never alone. I'm pretty outgoing and pretty good at meeting people. I've enjoyed staying at hostels and found that a good way to meet like-minded people. I'm not worried about taking this trip alone, but just think it may be a little more fun and safer with someone.

Take a look at the Lonely Planet thorn tree site. You may find people who are going to be in the same areas at the same time and you can meet up for a meal or something.Talk travel and trade tips for the area. Much better than planning a whole trip with someone you don't know.

On Trip Advisor's various Destination Forums there is a PM feature so you can chat with like-minded individuals. Use the forums for your own home town, and the forums for the places you are interested in traveling.

If you're not completely opposed to joining a tour, I'd recommend G Adventures or Intrepid. I've done a few tours w/ G. 75% on the tour are like-minded solo travelers. You sound easy going so you shouldn't have problems getting along w/ the others. I've made many friends through tours & we end up traveling together again (not on tours). There's no single supplement as they room you w/ someone of the same sex. From my experience, the single guy on tour ends up w/ his own room b/c the other men are w/ their partners so you might get lucky. Also, if you have any issues w/ your roommate, you can let your guide know & alternate accommodations can be arranged (I've seen this happen). You can do some solo adventures before/after tour in the starting/ending cities & continue traveling solo after the tour.

Travelling with a stranger seems to be odd at times. I am just wondering if its totally fine with you to meet with someone and be able to travel with him/her without enough knowledge of his/her personality? Just a thought.

While I wouldn't share a room with someone I met on the internet, I have shared expenses on guided tours with people I've met that way (once on a Cape Horn cruise, once during a trip to Ecuador). In one case we shared background info and in another did Facebook friends so had some comfort level.

We stay in the same hotels (booked and paid individually) and pay the guide in shares. For part of your tour you could leave some free days and then if you meet others can tag along, or book a local tour when you get there.

I found my travel buddies through my travel club. No matter where I go, when I travel on a club trip I';; always have built in travel buddies to hang with so I'm never alone. It's been a great way for me to meet people from all over. It's also helped to introduce me to people here in my local area that I probably wouldn't have met otherwise.
