Has anyone used the sites VRBO or airbnb to rent homes/apartments in Europe or Israel? I have had some friends who have had good success but I have also heard some stories about scams. What are the things I should look out for when renting this way?

I've just used VRBO for the first time for an upcoming trip to Prague. I've read about scams on this forum so I didn't consider any place that did not accept Paypal or Visa. Sending money direct to a bank account or by Western Union to someone you don't know is inviting trouble. Overall, I think the system is a good one, but every barrel has its bad apples.
You could also try posting this question on the Europe forum which gets more traffic and therefore more likely to get responses.
Rented a wonderful apt in Lisbon through VRBO and another beautiful place in Crete through AirBnB.
