7-10 day trip ideas with kid/teen

Hello! I am looking for trip ideas for my little family of 4 (girls ages 10 and 15). I am a bit limited in my dates as my work only permits me to travel between Dec 1st and March 15th. We are not very big on outdoor winter activities but dont mind the cold as we live in New England. My 10 year old loves history (all things harry Potter-ish and greek/roman mythology). My 15 year old loves cities/bright lights and/or the beach so we are looking to incorporate a little of something for both. Hubby and I are looking to get in a bit of history/and bit of landscape and some good food/beer. I am looking for budget friendly travel ideas. It does not need to be outside of the US though I would really love to bring them out of the country for the first time.
Thanks for any advice and tips you can send my way!

Europe is too cold for swimming, but these would make great short trips.
You want the shortest airtime, and in winter cities are easier with more inside things to do and cafes for stopping to warm up. Before Christmas is nice for lights, etc.

1. London. Right now, fares are running around $600 RT, NYC to London. At that price, you could do it. It won't give you a beach, but you can get that at home in summer. It would give you history in spades, great museums, Harry Potter, etc. Spend 4 of your days in London, 1 in the Cotswold countryside for the landscape and 1 in Bath for history, architecture and the Roman baths. If necessary to shorten it, just do London. Include some theater nights.

2. Paris. Great place for a 7 day trip! Take a day trip or two to someplace in the countryside.

3. If you have 10 days, the Andalucia area of Spain. I didn't check airfare, so don't know if it is doable on your budget, but I would check it out. You get so much History, landscape, interesting food.

4. Mexico. I have not been there, but several people on the board are real experts, and they love it. Budget wise, you could certainly do it. You would have history, landscape and beaches.

5. A Caribbean Cruise. Choose the ship and itinerary wisely and you can have fabulous beaches, beautiful landscape and lots of history. So many European countries are tied to islands in the Caribbean with famous people and ships going back and forth, and the rise and fall of some European countries dependent on trade in the Caribbean. This is certainly doable on your budget. It is also a great break from New England winters. Do it in February or March.

London w/ a day trip to Bath or Oxford (in Bath the Roman Baths will knock your 10yo's socks off, and in Oxford . . . http://www.worldofwanderlust.com/har...sit-in-oxford/

And platform 9 3/4 in London.

Your 15yo will LOVE London.

Not only are fares to London probably the cheapest to anywhere in Europe -- the £ is very depressed against the US$ -- getting amazingly close to parity.

Per the budget:

W/ a week (7 days) you would only have 5 nights/4.5-5 days on-the ground. So as long as you can find good airfares, your budget should work fine. You can find a nice 1 bedroom apartment sleeping 4 or a small 2 bedroom for around $150+ per night. Or you can get a family room at a Travelodge or Premier Inn for much less, well under $100 per night. (that is IF your daughter doesn't turn 16 before the trip - for a family room to work the children must be under 16. Otherwise you'd have to get two rooms - but that would still be less than $200 per night)

For instance the Covent Garden Travelodge (in the absolute center of London) has family rooms for £59 in January or £70 including breakfast and wifi.

Hi,

If you are thinking of London -- then you will want to re-post on the Europe forum. There are MANY good/central neighborhoods in London.

As I mentioned in my earlier post -- the Covent Garden Travelodge could not be more central - no charm but modern and clean and very budget/family friendly. But there are quite literally hundreds of other equally good properties.

If your 10 YO is really into Harry Potter consider taking her to the Harry Potter Studio Tour (www.wbstudiotour.co.uk) - it's located about 20 miles northwest of London. We took our granddaughter there on her 12th birthday and she thought it was the best part of a week long trip.
