40th Birthday Trip
I am going to be 40 in the middle of January. I want to celebrate somewhere other than home. I am open to going anywhere. I just want this time to be memorable and wonderful and economical! It will just be myself and my BF. It would be just for 4-6 nights..... Any suggestions will be welcome!

We really need to know more. Do you want to be someplace warm? What is your budget? "Economical" means different things to different people. What type of activities (if any) are you interested in?

Yes, you should give us more details with regards to this journey. However, in what regards memorable places, I would recommend Alesund or Bergen in Norway, Barcelona in Spain, Vienna in Austria, Stockholm in Sweden. There are many more wonderful destinations. You just have to decide what exactly you want from this trip and what budget you have.

Also, where are you departing from? And how much time will you have-- a long weekend, a week, a month??
"Economical" is in the eye of the beholder, so you should specify an upper limit, at least.
Where have you already been? Paris is a lot of people's idea of a great special occasion place, as are NYC, Vegas, a tropical beach... but if you've already been there, not so much.

Thank you so much for your time in replying. Here are the answers to the questions. I tried to condense:
1. I will be departing from NC- just depends on the flights.
2. I will have from Jan. 13 to Jan. 19... The big day is the 15th and it is really important that I am somewhere that day.
3. I have, in the past, been to all of the Scandinavian countries (which I agree are amazing places), Vegas, NYC, eastern seaboard...
4. Economical in my mind is: Airfare and hotel around $3,000.00 for the both of us.
5. I am not picky... Just want ideas and suggestions. I love to see new things and eat good food. My 30's have been wonderful and tough (marriage, kids, divorce, new relationships- the norm for most I guess ).

well I went to Europe for the very 1st time for my 40th. But that's too far to travel with only 4-6 days and a limited budget.
How about somewhere in the Caribbean? Do you like the beach? Negril Jamaica's a beautiful place. It's warm and sunny there that time of year. Or the Caribbean coast of Mexico ("Mayan Riviera") would work for your budget. Isla Mujeres off Cancun would be fun.

Yes. Time and money are a huge factor. I guess I am looking for Bang for the Buck.
Having said that, I love the beach. Spanish is no problem... my BF is fluent. Where are the best places? Would you go all-inclusive or not? Would you rent a house? I'm really not into "run of the mill."
Thank you

I agree on the Riviera Maya area of Mexico. If you are not into "run of the mill" then I wouldn't go all inclusive. Of course if you are big drinkers then it pays to go all inclusive.
Look into some of the boutique hotels in Playa del Carmen. Playa Maya is a very nice boutique type hotel. On the beach, in town, breakfast is included.

I would never go all-inclusive, but that's really personal preference. There are all kinds of unique places to stay on that side of Mexico that are not "run of the mill". You don't need to speak Spanish but you'd probably have more fun and a few more opportunities since you do.
"Best places" depends what you are looking for. If you want boutique hotel and options for nightlife, shopping, etc. check out Playa del Carmen. If you want laid back look at Isla Mujeres or Akumal.
I usually rent an apartment when I'm in Puerto Vallarta (not a house) but certainly that's an option anywhere as well.

Again thank you all for responding. If I went the route of renting a "unit", what is typical costs- food, etc.? I have been looking at VRBO in the Akumal region. Loving the feel and look of it all.... Any suggestions? Love the beach; can snorkel but don't own anything; not really into diving; love to cook; also would love to have things in walking distance.

I don't know that side of Mexico to speak to Akumal.
I can rent a very nice apartment/condo in Puerto Vallarta off season (May thru Oct) for under $500/week. In high season (Nov thru April) they would go for about twice that. Hotel rooms between $50/night and sky's the limit.
For daily expenses including 1-2 restaurant meals out (food, beverage, cocktails, shopping, groceries, taxis, busses, zumba classes, gym pass, a few gifts & souveniers) I allow $100usd per day for myself but I rarely spend that much.
