10 Days of travel help!
Hi all,
My mother has some time off over the Christmas & New Years period and we wanted to go somewhere together. We know everything is going to be more expensive around that time, but unfortunately those are the days she has off. We have the 26th Dec - 5th Jan to go somewhere and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what we could do?
We are flying from Melbourne, Australia and would like somewhere with a fair bit of things to do while also having a nice beach for relaxing days. Happy to move around to different places. Can be international or even within Australia. We don't want to go to anywhere like Bangkok and we're not interested in shopping. Also don't want to go to Vietnam as we've both travelled Vietnam extensively.
Thanks everyone!

Whether Bangkok is a nice place is a matter of opinion. It has some great sights and some great eats, but is also hot, humid, noisy, polluted and afflicted with horrible traffic (although the public transport is good).

You might as well throw a dart at a map. A list of 50 places other people think are worthwhile will tell YOU nothing about whether it will appeal to you or not.
A travel forum is a great place to get specific information but it is no substitute for doing your own research and making your own decisions based on your research. Asking people, 'where should we go' is asking others to decide for you. There is nothing unique in your post that would narrow down suggestions.
You might as well just google. https://www.google.ca/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=...each+vacations

@Sojourntraveller I wasn't asking someone to plan my holiday. I asked because I was interested to know of any places people had been that they thought would be good for a 10 day trip. Or perhaps someone might bring up something I hadn't considered, which is what I was hoping for. Thank you @thursdaysd and @toddpeterson for your suggestions.

ignore him -- he likes to lecture people. You'll get used to it . . .
I might suggest you re-post on the Asia and Australia/Pacific boards since they are much more active than this one. W/ just 10 days you'll likely want to stick to one of those regions.
Or maybe South Africa???

I've not been to all of these places but I feel they might be good for the sort of trip you are looking at:
Hawaii
Fiji [DD spent a week there and loved it]
North Island of NZ -[ especially Bay of islands /Coromandal peninsular though it might be busy]
Tasmania
if you were thinking of SA you can do quite a lot in 10 days - a stay in Cape Town and then the garden route or a Kruger Safari and the Drakensberg mountains, but not both.
have fun planning!
Easter Island
Galapagos Islands

@janisj and @annhig thanks so much for your help! I actually travelled around South Africa quite extensively 2 years ago. Such a beautiful and incredible place!
Okay, maybe I should post in the other forum too. I wasn't sure where to post so thanks!
North Island of NZ sounds like a great idea to me and neither of us have been there yet. When things are close you tend to think you'll go there at some point. But it's probably a good amount of time to get a taste for NZ.

evenabird - you will get some very good advice on the australasia forum about NZ - i know that we did. but a word of caution - 10 days is nowhere near enough to see the whole of NZ, and not even the whole of the SI - we had 2 weeks and missed loads, which Is why i suggested the NI because in 10 days, you could see quite a lot and not feel short-changed.

I'll say again, you aren't asking anything you can't find for yourself UNLESS you give some specific criteria on which people could base RELEVANT suggestions.

There is my suggested lists for you to consider. Helpful?
