Does anyone have any first hand knowledge or preference for Recoleta or Palermo?
Thanks

Glover´s ongoing report - 2 months in Colombia

I think they are both great neighborhoods. We stayed in both and preferred Palermo. The Palermo neighborhood seemed to attract a younger crowd than Recoleta. Palermo has lots of nightlife, great restaurants and lots of little boutiques. Recoleta seemed to have bigger hotels, lots of upscale shopping and also lots of great restaurants. You can't go wrong in either.
thanks
Palermo is a very big barrio. There are huge differences in Palermo Viejo (Soho and Hollywood) and Palermo and Palermo Chico and Palermo Nuevo and Alto Palermo. The "hip" areas are Soho and Hollywood...Chico is refined and $$$$$$$$$$$wealthy, Nuevo is the area near Jumbo/Easy shopping and, while upscale, does not have the street life of some of the other areas, and Alto Palermo can be very nice or not depending on exact location...
Moral: Know where your apartment is located. This said, I prefer most parts of Palermo over Recoleta.

"Alto Palermo can be very nice or not depending on exact location..."
How would you rate the area of Alto Palermo near Arenales and Julian Alvarez?
I'll second or third the above - it reall comes down to exactly where you're talking about. Recoleta can range from a very ritzy, wealthy area to a casual trendy one, to bordering on a working class neighborhood. Palermo, even more so (being the biggest barrio in the city). If you have a sense of some of the listed intersections you were looking at (presuming you're looking through a service of some sort) it would help give you some advice.
The intersection is Guatemala and Carranza.
thanks

Recoleta is more centrally located for sightseeing. Palermo is a large neighborhood and really accessible only by taxis. Though taxis are cheap in BA, I would prefer the walking access to different types of shopping, restaurants and nighlife that Recoleta has.
Although I have only taken them a couple of times so far, I believe that Palermo is accessible by Subte. There is even a large Subte station called Plaza Italia..
Recoleta is not accesible by subway though..
Taxis cost very little, even with an expected price increase...and there are SO many!
I prefer Recoleta for various reasons but still recommend Palermo also..as said, depends on the street..Both barrios are great.
Part of the Palermo is serviced by subway. 'D' line runs along Av. Santa Fe. However, stay clear of any apartments along the street, it is very noisy.
We just spent 2 months living in an apartment in Palermo and loved it. We rented an apartment from http://www.apartmentsbaires.com.ar and we highly recommend this website if you are looking for a rental apartment. The site lists apartments managed by Daniel Huerta who got us a great, spacious apartment in Palermo for a resonable price. He is a great guy who will attend to all your questions and needs with the apartment . Palermo was a great part of the city to live in because it has pretty residencial areas, but it also close enough to the downtown to easily get into the busier parts of the city. I also felt very safe in Palermo and loved the tree-lined streets, parks, street cafes, etc. I didn't spend too much time in Recoleta, but I think it's fairly similar to Palermo in that it's an upscale and safe place to live.
drdawggy - this post is old but maybe you'll see it?
).
: Guatemala and Arevalo
Found a couple of apartments I like - which "neighborhood" would you recommend between the two? We obviously want "safe" and not too crazy noisy where we cant sleep - but want to be near things (especially shopping
1) Brand new apartment: Cabrea and Gascon
2) aparment with very nice terrace
Thank you!
Wow.. this city has changed so much since that post .. 2007 !
Palermo has grown and changed amazingly fast just since we have lived here the past 2 years.
dr dawggy knows much more about Palermo than I do .. so I won't risk a comment on the locations ..
