Which day is the best to start Diamox according to our itinerary.

Jump to last reply

Hi Fodor's community, thank you for answering my questions concerning our upcoming trip to Peru. Here's one more question, that is: according to our itinerary, which is the best day to start taking Diamox (I understand that it should be one day before ascent and then continue for two days after reaching altitude).

Day 4, Lima-Cusco-Sacred Valley: Fly to Cusco, spend the day in the SV, see Puca Pucara and then the Temple of Sacsayhuaman. Visit Pisac. Stay the night in Sacred Valley.

Day 5, Sacred Valley-Machu Picchu: Visit the Inca Fortres of Ollantaytambo before taking the train and bus to MP. Stay at a nearby hotel.

Day 6, Machu Picchu-Cusco: After lunch, return SV by train and continue on to Cusco.

Day 7, Cusco-Juliaca-Puno (Lake Titicaca): Spend the morning in Cusco. In the afternoon fly to Juliaca, continue on to Puno.

Day 8, Puno-Escursion to Lake Titicaca

Day 9, Puno-Sillustani-Juliaca-Lima: Depart for Juliaca in the morning, fly to Lima in the afternoon.

Does it make sense that we start the Diamox on day 6?

Here's another question, since Diamox has potential side effects, we are also considering if we should just take it when we actually experience symptoms of altitude sickness. Any suggestions? Please tell us if you have (or know that other people have) any side effects. Thank you.
