Which Amazon area/lodge in Peru?

We (couple in our 50s) are considering a 4-5 nights stay at an Amazonian lodge as part of a longer Peru trip in July-August 2018 (Sacred Valley, Cusco and Machu Picchu). We are looking for good diverse wildlife viewing, but not to rough it. For now, we are only trying to determine which area would be the best for us, and we are comparing Tambopata and Manu.
We are also considering a trip to the Pantanal/Brazil for the following year, and we are concerned that the 2 environments might be too similar? Same animals/birds in both areas? Should we maybe consider Iquitos instead? Or maybe just a totally different area of Peru?
Any thoughts and ideas would be great, thanks.

In March I stayed at Amazonia Expeditions Tahuayo Lodge near Iquitos. It was far from roughing it, even though it was in a very remote location. They pick you up at the Iquitos airport, take you to their office in Iquitos, and then transport you by boat to the lodge. The 4-hour boat trip travels up the Amazon and Tahuayo Rivers. It's not as bad as it may sound. You get your own guide for the duration of your stay, and can customize your itinerary to your interests. The cost is pretty reasonable and includes transportation between the Iquitos airport and the lodge, lodging, meals, and activities. I went during the high water season, so getting around was mostly by canoe or motorboat. I would have liked to do more hiking, but only the highest parts of the forest were accessible for that. You will be there at the beginning of the low water season. The website is www.perujungle.com. There are also hundreds of mostly excellent reviews on Tripadvisor.

Hi Brian,
How many days did you stay there? By reading reviews, it seems that 4 nights is not enough, as transfer from Cusco (the area we'll be) is too long, what do you think? I think we need to focus on Manu or Tambopata this time, and save the Amazon for a future trip.
Thanks.

I would agree that 4 nights is not enough, considering the length of time it takes to get to the lodge. I was there for 6 nights, including 2 at their more remote research center. For me, that was enough time. I traveled there from Lima, after arriving in Peru the night before. It took a good part of the day getting to the lodge - 2 hour flight to Iquitos, half-hour drive from the Iquitos airport to the lodge office, and then a 3-4 hour boat ride to get to the lodge. Then reverse that on the way back.

Even Puerto Maldonado is Amazon Basin, the Amazon river can be seen only in Iquitos. Iquitos is more expensive and to really enjoy it you should have to take a cruiseship to go around Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. There you can see Pink Dolphins, Black Caimans and maybe an Anaconda. If you use the lodge nearby Iquitos, you will see more natives than animals, unless you visit a Canopy in the deepest jungle.

That is why I like Puerto Maldonado or better to say Tambopata National Reserve, because it is cheaper and it is easier to see animals: Well, to be honest I've been there 2 weeks and I had the luck to see black caimans, a lot of macaws which are in dangerous of extintion and a jaguar.

In order to perform a circuit, Puerto Maldonado (Tambopata) is the choice.
In order to keep a low budget, Tambopata is the choice.

If you are a birdwatcher, probably like to go to the deepest area in Tambopata to the Tambopata Research Center (TRC). There is a macaws rescue project. And for going there 5Days/4nights would be OK. https://www.anywhere.com/peru/destin...esearch-center

For Manu, you need more time. That is the deepest jungle.

Thanks. It seems we have a couple extra days, for a total of 7 so we've decided on Manu. Need to look into the details now
