Wanting a nice day or half day trip outside of Montevideo

We will be two full days in Montevideo. The first day will be a day tour of the city and it's immediate surrounds. We have had proposed to us (DH and myself) for another full day driving to Punta del Este, with stops along the way and back. We were quoted $300 USD for that full day. In reality, it's just too long a day and neither of us really wants to see Punta del Este.

We thought about Colonia. We are actually flying from Montevideo back to Buenos Aires and feel that driving all the way to Colonia and back to Montevideo and then flying the next day in the same direction didn't make sense.

Sooooo.....any suggestions for a nice half day jaunt into the countryside? I thought about wineries, but my husband is not much into wine. But he is into scenery. Maybe the two could be combined? Or, should we just stay in Montevideo for the second day and do our own tripping around? Thanks for any and all input!
