Looks like Uruguay has a lot of wildlife, especially along the Atlantic coast. It also looks easier to access from Buenos Aires than the Valdes Peninsula. How much would we miss if we went north along the Atlantic coast of Uruguay by car from Montevideo rather than flying to Puerto Madryn and then back?

This really was not an April Fool. No one been to the coast of Uruguay in search of wildlife?

I have never thought of Uruguay as a wildlife destination. We spent a week or so there in 2008 getting the bus down from Iguazu to Montevideo and Colonia. Saw loads of cows along the way (pre and post BBQ!) but no wildlife. I think it would would have to go some to compete with the Valdes peninsula.

Maybe you were thinking of the sea lions? Otherwise other than cows, sheep and goats you'll only see small things like hares and cavies. But of course you can arrange to go hunting, bambis and wild boars come to mind. And birds. Not unheard of that Americans and Europeans go hunting in Uruguay.

Thanks Ticino--I was going by a description in Lonely Planet.

We're not hunters but I wouldn't mind seeing a wild boar or two.

Looks like Valdes Peninsula is the destination to see marine life.

Valdes Peninsula wildlife is seasonal, especially whales and penguins, so check the wildlife calendars.

Thanks mlgb--Per Lonely Planet, October is the among the best months to see whales and penguins, so that's when I've planned the trip. Haven't booked anything yet but I've come close a couple of times.
