Torres Del Paine - total 2 weeks in Chile

I am going in last week of October ( flyin to Santiago first ) and from there to Punta arenas I'll be in Chile for 2 weeks. I have never been on hiking trip , I did a few hikes in NZ last year but they were all day trips/hikes. Would you recommend TdP hike for someone who is not experienced ? Also - to book the hostels do I have to book them through fantastico or vertice, is there anyway I can book them myself? $1k for 4-5 nights in bunk beds seems a little high . Also for the W treck do we keep going in one direction for 4 days or is there a base point where you keep your stuff and take day trips ?

thanks in advance

You should check availability for any type of lodging in Torres del Paine first. I would be surprised if you find what you want at this late date. The lodges are booked through either Vertice or Fantastico Sur, depending on which company runs them. You cannot do the W as day trips.

You can hike to the Towers from the lodging at Las Torres. It is an all out and back hike on the W or a day hike.

From Las Torres you can catch a shuttle to take the catamaran across the lake from Pudeto and stay at the Vertice Patagonia Lodge (Paine Grande), and do a day hike partway to the French Valley and back again to Paine Grande.

To hike to the west end of the W is also an out and back long day.

All together it is several nights and days.

Yes, to book direct you go thru Vertice Patagonia or Fantastic Sur.

Just to note, Campamento Torres is closed for the whole season.
