Machu Picchu. Fascinating and beautiful.
Over Thanksgiving 98 I flew to Lima then Cusco. Stayed at El Monasterio. 17th century monastery that's now a 5 star hotel. Exceptional service, accommodations and amenities. Next day took a helicopter to Machu Picchu. Chopper took 25 minutes where train takes 3 hours. Left more time for the ruin. Had read up on Inca civilization and Machu Picchu. Enhanced the fascination. Guide walked/climbed me over most of it. His insights added to the experience. Vistas were unreal.
Choppered back to Cusco. 10k ft elevation is a problem. Takes adjusting. Wandered Cusco, shopping & restaurants. Thoroughly entertained.
Aero Continente back to Lima next day. Lima is big, busy, polluted and dangerous. Suburbs of San Isidro and Miraflores are the only places to be. Felt unsafe otherwise.
Great adventure. Beautiful country. Friendly people. The experience of Machu Picchu is very special. You come back a little changed. It was the spiritual center of the Inca empire. Now I understand why.
