Recommend Resturants for Upcoming Trip to Peru
Hello -
My husband and I are traveling to Peru in September. We are staying in Urubamba, Cusco, and AC. Looking for some recommendations of restaurants for two people who like casual restaurants with good prices. Nothing too "fancy" just good food.
I've heard that the Inka Grill and Hearts Cafe are really good.

I highly recommend Hearts Cafe http://www.heartscafe.org/ . We did some voluntary work there with the owner Sonia, and English woman who has written a number of books on food hygiene. It is one of the few place where you can guarantee good food in casual surrounding prepared to western hygiene standards. It is right on the main square and a great place to sit outside and watch the world go by. A major plus is that you will be supporting the local people.
We stayed in a bungalow in Urumbamba for a few weeks and got to know it quite well. Outside of the hotels It is not the best place for restaurants (Ollantaytambo is much better in terms of variety and quality). However there are several places serving good ceviche in the streets off of the main square but we weren't impressed with the restaurants actually on the Plaza des Armas.
In Cusco there are so many to choose from. Chez Maggy (for the best pizzas), Jacks Cafe (burgers sandwiches & light meals) & Fallen Angel (good steaks and wacky decor!) all spring to mind as having good food at reasonable prices. or, just wander around the San Blas area and there are loads to choose from but many will serve much the same cuisine (it sometimes seems that pizza is the national dish!). There are some v.good ceviche places out of the centre but you would need local advice on where to find them. In Cusco anything on the the Plaza is going to be a rip off in terms of price (even the McDonalds is overpriced!). The market one block awayfrom PdA is a good place for many different varieties of freshly squeezed juices.
AC is(or at least was) renowned for food hygiene issue so be careul where and what yo choose to eat.

In Ollantaytambo Hearts Cafe for light meals and the restaurant at the El Albergue hotel on the platform (alpaca loin dish is great).
Astrid and Gaston is overpriced international, and reports say it is not up to snuff recently.
Sonias is not in central Lima it is in Chorillos & made famous by Tony Bourdain. In Central Lima for ceviche, Kapallaq (small, make a reservation), or Pescado Capitales, or Punta Azul (less expensive) or Chez Wong. They also have other kinds of seafood if you are afraid of ceviche, but I do recommend it!
Skip Inka Grill in Cusco try Cicciolina if you want upscale.
A good choice for typical inexpensive Peruvian is the wood roasted chicken. Pardo's in Lima or Los Toldos in Cusco.
Also try some special ice cream flavors at 4-D (in the Lima Airport) or Laritza (at the Miraflores Larcomar mall).

No one has mentioned Baco in Cuzco - owned by the same folks as Cicciolina and just as delicious!! I had a seared tuna that was like butter!!
Also in Cuzco we ate breakfast at Jack's Cafe. I wish we could have one here in Miami _ id eat there every weekend! the french otast and egg scrambles were perfection (and definitely not fancy!!)
In Ollantaytabo we enjoyed Pachamamma for great wood fired pizza. My kids like handing out by the oven and watching the guy roll out and top of pizzas before putting them in the oven.
Wish we had more timer to Cuzco to continue eating!! there were so many places we wanted to try!!
