Just been advised by SA Explorers Club that the new airport will open on 20 Feb with the first flights due to arrive on 21st. Apparently it is situated approx 20 kms from the centre with transport to the city taking around 1 hour and a taxi costing upwards of $20.

That is a good news, finally after many years of being postponed is finally happening, I will inform my main office in NYC, as for now, we are still using Guayaquil's International Airport to go to Ecuador, we do not have any complains whatsover, we will have to see on terms of budget if this is really worthy to make a change, because as you probably know, we heard this new terminal is an hour and a half away from Quito, and the main road is not even finished yet, so will see if on 2.014 we could make the change when finally everything will be operational including the main highway, and the Airport tax, by the way. Does anybody knows how much is going to be?
Yes I just did a research, Quito's airport tax is 50 USD (Fifty dollars) is one of the expensive airports on Southamerica, however the tax will be included on the Ticket and You will have to pay for it at the moment they issue you the ticket, whether is at the airport or at the airline counter. Also you would probably need to add 20 USD more if you are willing to share a Van from the airport to Quito, otherwise will be an extra 50 USD if You decided to take a Taxy by yourself. Pretty expensive huh? If You add another 50 USD when is time to go back, no thanks I will stay with Guayaquil only 24 USD airport tax and for 3 USD more you are already on downtown Guayaquil from the airport's Taxy. No wonder why this is Galagapos main terminal.
I can report that the new airport is open. I flew out of it this morning, Feb. 21st. I had to pay $30 for a taxi from downtown Quito and the ride took about an hour and 10 minutes. The new airport is pretty, but not quite complete. It is located in wide open spaces, very different from the old airport. There is a shuttle bus from the new airport to the old airport which costs $8 I was told, which would mean a cheaper taxi ride to a downtown hotel.

Flew out on 2/22 - took exactly an hour from hotel to airport by taxi for 10:15 flight to Miami. So it's easy to get to - when there's no traffic! Things seemed to be running smoothly. But I would hate to have to take the drive during a busier time. Airport tax was $15.00.
Just been emailed details of a new hotel by the new airport http://airporthotelquito.com/ at $59 for a double room, it seem a little expensive but I suppose prices will fall once more places open and competition increases.
