Quito, Octavalo,Cuenca, and Guayaquil for two weeks

My husband and I are going next month to The above cities, and are getting ready to book hotels now. We thought we would stay 4 days in Quito, then on Friday go to Otavalo to see artists studios, Saturday to the market, and Easter Sunday there (with nothing to do) then on Monday fly from Quito to Cuenca. We will stay there for 5 days, is this good? We will then fly to Guayaquil for the last three days. Are we on the right track? Should we add a day to some city, and shorten another?
How about day trips that we should do? Thanks for any help you can provide. Also should we stay in the new part of towns or old part?
