Peru Trip for the Family

Hi,

I'm working on arranging a trip to Peru for my wife's birthday. One of her bucket list items is to see the Macaws in Tambopata, so that's the main focus. It's going to be us and our 6yo daughter.

I'm working through Tambopata Research Center to arrange a stay at Refugio Amazonas for 3 nights and 4 days. Afterwards my wife is interested in visiting Machu Picchu. Has anyone done this transition? Is there any way to get there from Puerto Maldonado directly, or will we need to go back to Cuzco first? We'd only be staying for ~2 nights or so. I've read that one can take a bus to the ruins as well vs walking, which sounds like it'd be better for us since none of us are particularly athletic.

Also, we're an interracial lesbian couple. We're of course aware that PDA is not wise in general if we're uncertain of our situation, but if we keep our interactions platonic should we be fine?

Thanks!

You will need to fly to Cusco first to get to Machu Picchu.

Do take into account the high altitude and the need to acclimatise. As you appear to be on a short visit, I would suggest flying into Cusco, transferring immediately by taxi to Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley which is at a lower altitude than Cusco and therefore easier to acclimatise. Stay overnight ( it is a wonderful place in its own right) and then get the train to MP early in the morning. MP can be done in one day but many prefer to stay at least one night in Agauas Calientes from where you get the bus up to the citadel.

Make sure to book trains and entrance tickets well in advance.

If you have the time do try to spend a couple of nights in Cusco on your way back as there is so much to see. Also, there is a lot to see on the way to/from Cusco / Olly which could be incorporated into the transfer between the two.

I have no idea of Peruvian attitudes to interracial lesbian couples but can't imagine it would be much of a problem in the absence of any overt displays of affection.

It probably will take most of the day to get to Cusco if you are going all the way to the TRC, unless you do the boat ride back to PM on your final day. As crellston suggests I would fly to Cusco to PM, taxi to Ollantaytambo , train from Ollaytay to Aguas Calientes, then the shuttle bus up to MP. You might want to book your arrival night hotel in Ollantaytambo rather than Cusco. El Alberge near the Ollantay train station works well for taking the early morning train to MP.

I suspect the interracial aspect may cause more looks. I'd try to have transfers set up ahead of time (from the airports in particular). Taxidatum.com is good between Cusco and Ollantaytambo.

Flights from Puerto Maldonado (Tambopata) to Cusco use to arrive around 1PM. If you do not have enought time, you can take a taxi or pre-arranged a transfer to Ollantaytambo and if you still have energy you can take a night train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes at 7PM. If not, you can stay at Ollantaytambo for 1 night and next morning take a train to Aguas Calientes, they leave from 05:30 AM. and there are many departures in the morning, anyway trains should be booked in advcance.

About the interracial lesbian aspect, to be honnest it does not matter the race, but the homosexual issues it is well explained in this link https://www.anywhere.com/peru/questi...cieved-in-peru

I would suggest to use LGTB-friendly travel agencies to arrange your trip, they will provide people, drivers and guides who are lesbian/gay-friendly, that will make you feel more confortable.

Similar to the other responses, your best bet would be to first arrive in Cusco and either spend a night in ollantaytambo or the Sacred valley. They are both nice places to stay at with beautiful surroundings. the following morning you can take the train to aguas calientes and go to Machu Picchu. To be honest Cusco/machupicchu has so many visitors daily that the people are quite used to seeing interracial/gay couples. I don't think you need a travel agency that specifies in it either so you should be ok as long as the agency and their reps are fluent in your language.

hello how are you, you can travel by plane to cusco (recommended).
Arriving at Aguas Calientes you can walk or take the bus up and down (cost: US $ 18.50)
regards

We did the reverse trip starting with Machu Picchu and then the Amazon rainforest. I believe you have to get to Puerto Maldonado through Cusco. I think we grouped everything around the Cusco area first because we had to leave from there to get to the rainforest. Here's a blog I wrote about our trip:

Enjoy trip planning and happy birthday to your wife!
