Peru Itinerary Critique - 3 weeks

Jump to last reply

My wife and I are hoping to travel to Peru for 3 weeks in July. Here is our draft itinerary so far. Pisco/Ica/Nazca weren't must see's for us, but the Inca Trail passes aren't available for the dates at the beginning of our trip so we had to fill that time in with something else. Any suggestions on that time and/or where to put the two "extra days" at the end would be helpful. As you can see, the highlights are the Inca Trail and Manu/Tambopata Reserve for us. Thanks!

Day 1 Travel to Lima (10-16 hrs) / Lima
Day 2 Lima to Pisco (3 hrs) / Pisco / Pisco to Ica (1 hr) / Ica / Huacachina
Day 3 Ica to Nazca (2 hrs) / Nazca to Arequipa Bus (8 hrs)
Day 4 Arequipa / Colca Canyon (maybe 2 day trek?)
Day 5 Arequipa / Colca Canyon (maybe 2 day trek?)
Day 6 Arequipa to Puno (5 hrs) / Lake Titicaca
Day 7 Puno to Cusco (5 hrs) / Cusco
Day 8 MP & Inca Trail Trek
Day 9 MP & Inca Trail Trek
Day 10 MP & Inca Trail Trek
Day 11 MP & Inca Trail Trek
Day 12 Cusco (relax)
Day 13 Fly from Cusco to Port Maldonado / Manu or Tampopata Reserve Tour
Day 14 Manu or Tambopata Reserve Tour
Day 15 Manu or Tambopata Reserve Tour
Day 16 Manu or Tambopata Reserve Tour
Day 17 Manu or Tambopata Reserve Tour (optional 5th day)
Day 18 Fly from Port Maldonado to Lima / Lima
Day 19 Extra
Day 20 Extra
Day 21 Travel from Lima to Home (10-16 hrs)

Hi, love your itinerary! Wish I had done the Inca trail too but it was fully booked when we tried to reserve it with my friends (we also had little time).

Here are my main advice for your itinerary:
    - Lima is not as bad as most people say, it's worth a least 1 day (so maybe to keep in mind for one of those extra days!)
    - Ica/Huacachina is fun but if it had to be done again I would skip it: sure it's a beautiful oasis in the middle of the desert and you can do buggy and sand surf and everything but it doesn't come close to other spots like Colca (if that can be compared at all!)
    - Paracas should be considered (they call it mini-galapagos in Peru)
    - Definitely do the 2-day trek in Colca canyon that goes at the bottom of the canyon (some tour companies say it's forbidden, that's just not true!)
    - I would add 1 day for the Lake Titicaca (floating islands) or if possible Isla Del Sol (in Bolivia) which was one of my favorite destinations during my trip

Hope this helps! You can check the Peru-Bolivia itinerary I posted on my website (see profile) or ask me if you questions.
