Packing for Buenos Aires
Well, not packing quite yet but beginning to think about it. Staying in BA the whole time except for a couple of days in Iguazu.
We'll be there the first two weeks of May which, as I check the weather websites, seems to be in the 60 to 70 degree range. That's more or less like our fall. So I'm thinking light wool or heavier cotton pants, good jeans, a variety of tops with sweaters to go over them, light jackets, maybe one dress. Some pants and tops will be nice enough to wear to a decent restaurant. Good walking shoes and a pair of decent dressier shoes. A hat of some sort.
I know this is pretty general but am I forgetting or not thinking of something?
Friends of our just came back and during their visit to Iguazu Falls, they got soaked by the spray. She suggests taking a raincoat but I really don't want to pack that for just one event. I was thinking about bringing along a couple of those cheap, disposable rain ponchos. I know we'll look like dorks but at least we'll be dry dorks. What do you think?
Any packing suggestions at all would be appreciated. We've traveled in SA before but that was Brazil and I don't remember what time of year it was, though it was warm. We've never been to BA before and don't really know how 'formal' dress expectations are.
Thanks,
gtg

You can buy those ponchos at Iguazu, no need to bring one. I don't remember the exact price, but they were cheap. Iguaza is fabulous, but there is one place where you will get wet (see http://tinyurl.com/d8pfoqx ). Think about how to protect your camera, too.
Can't help much with the clothes question, I took the same stuff I always take. But BsAs is definitely a place for a money belt.

Good advice from thursdaysd.
I'm not exactly an authority on ladies' clothing, but we'll see if better informed sources post their advice.
I assume you are well aware of the huge savings that can be obtained by bringing cash dollars or using XOOM.
At least one more first time visitor will be here on May 2. Perhaps we should consider a GTG? However, I'm not much for advance planning.
Have a great time in our country.

Hi avrooster,
Yes, we'll be bringing US$ with us.
We'd love to get together for a GTG. I've been meaning to email you anyway and take you up on your generous offer to show us around one day. We're not doing much advance planning either -- in fact, right now the whole two weeks is an open book and that will only change if I find I have to buy tickets for something.
Who else is coming on the 2nd? Anyone I might know? We've always had wonderful luck meeting up with Fodorites when we travel.

I assume you have my e-mail, goddesstogo.
On May 2, I'll be helping http://tinyurl.com/clpftkl
with her currency exchange. She may or may not be available for that GTG.
I don't know when you are landing in BA, but be advised May 1 is a holiday here and may be a good day to show you around. If you arrive later than that, the morning of Sunday, May 5 would be a good time.

Hi AV,
We're leaving here on Friday, May 3 and will be there early on Saturday the 4th. Sunday the 5th would be a perfect jumping-off point for our visit.
I'm sorry but I don't have your email address. Is it posted here somewhere? I'm always hesitant to post mine but others are braver about it. I will post it, though, if I can't find yours.
I'm so looking forward to meeting you and exploring your exciting city!

Found it, AV! I'd been looking for a blue link, not words. And I don't know why -- maybe it's a Fodors time thing, but the time on it is now 8:15 although it may have been posted at 10:15 originally.
I'll email you a little later this week. Thanks again.
