I haven't been to both, so I can't compare the two, but Ollanta is really great. Small Inca town, excellent ruins, beatiful mountain scenery.

For a hotel, I can highly recommend El Alberque.

Ollanta is in the Sacred Valley, BTW.

Loved, loved Ollantaytambo -- much more charming than Urubama. This question was discussed on another thread -- try doing a search.

Not even close..Ollantaytambo.

However there are people that want luxury resorts with spas etc and those are not present in small town Ollantaytambo. Just a few nice small hotels and inns.

BtW if you are going really soon you may just have to take what is available.

www.apulodge.com great for budget in www.ollantaytambo.org

far prettier and more touristic than Urubamba....

www.libertador.com.pe has the new Tambo for upscale

pretty awesome if your budget is good...

Ollantaytambo. Plus the train leaves from there. You can also get ice cold "bears" at one of the internet cafes.

We stayed in Urumbamba for 3+ weeks, commuting daily to work in Ollantaytambo so know both places pretty well. If your requirements are for luxury hotels then you will find these around Urumbamba. However, much as I enjoyed our time there Urumbamba simply does not match Olly for the ambience, the number of decent restaurants (although there are some great ceviche places around the back streets) or indeed sites to see. Essentially there is littel for the tourist apart from the fiestas in the Plaza. Buses run when full from Urumbamba to Olly regularly and cost about 3 soles great way to meet the people "up close". Taxi ply the route between the two.

Ollantaytambo in contrast is an extremely picturesque town with loads to see and some amazing Inca architecture. We stayed in a few places when we first arrived some good and some not so good. Sorry but I can't recall the names. Hearts cafe on the Plaza de Armas has good food and is a great place for coffee in the morning or a beer at sunset and just watch the world go by. Exploring Olly fully would take a whole day and I presume you would use your other day to explore the SV - easy to rent a car and driver in the Plaza but bargain hard!

As mlgb put it so succinctly "Not even close..Ollantaytambo."

A few photos of both places can be found on our blog:

Entry # 60 cover Uru and Olly and 57 a number of places in the Sacred Valley - have fun it is a wonderful part of the world (& let us know what you decide)

Sheyla, Not an expert, but just returned from Galapagos, MP two week trip. Spent our night before MP at Posada del Inca Yucay, outside Ollantaytambo. The hotel was a former monastery, lovely grounds, incredible mountains behind, has its own restaurant. Just a beautiful evening - we rested in the lobby to the tunes of an Andean folk musician (flutes & guitar). Early in the morning, we had an hour and a half drive back to the train station in Ollantay, but we didn't mind. Lots to decide, don't think you can go too far wrong!! Deb

We stayed at Hotel Pakaritampo - very nice. http://www.pakaritampu.com/
Not luxurious but fine. It's right near the train station for the trip to MP. It's a short walk into town. If u decide to stay there get a room on top floor as they have wooden floors and the noise I would think could really carry to the room below. There are less expensive places to stay.

Pakaritampu is the most expensive in Ollantaytambo and has the worst restaurant!

For inexpensive try KB Tambo or Apu. KB has a good restaurant.

For mid level El Albergue, GREAT restaurant, or Hotel Sauce on the Plaza.
