Nazca lines - requires an overnight stay in Nazca?
From reading the bus schedule - it seems the travel time from Lima to Peru is 6 hrs. That would mean that even if we leave Peru in the morning around 7.00 we won't get to Nazca till 1 in the afternoon. What chance will we have of making an afternoon flight over the lines then? Am I worrying too much - or should I go ahead and book the morning bus to Nazca and try and book the night bus out of Nazca to Arequipa? Since this is our first stop out of Lima - I am stuck! Also, where/how do I book the flight over Nazca lines - they all seem to do a multiple e.g. hotel/bus with the flight added. Our trip is planned for May 2011. Thanks for any help

You should be aware that the US, UK and Australian governments all have strong warnings about the safety of flying over the Nazca lines out of the airport at Nazca:

Flew the lines with these folks a nice Dutch/peruvian couple
about a year ago they know the best safest companies
to fly with I paid $55 per person.
Was well worth it to the see largest GeoGlyphs in the world
a do not miss for me it cannot be seen from the ground.
It is a 6 hour each way 12 hour RT bus trip from Lima
so day tripping is not ideal to say the least...
Calmest and best times for flights are in the AM
so most come down via Paracas(Ballestas tour) Ica
do an overnite cheaply in Nasca fly in the AM and bus on
the next day...so an overnite for me is always best.
Happy Journey,

Huentetu - Thanks for the links. Interesting to see that the UK Govt. also has traveler advisory to USA! Also, it seems Peru is more dangerous in Lima and Arequipa - so one should never visit any part of Peru.
But, I am still planning my trip; I just need to determine if we must stay overnight in Nazca or not. I am agreeing with qwovadis in this - though earlier someone had posted - to not spend the night in Nazca, but, it seems, that only works, if, you get the overflight done during the day then you can catch a bus out - and yes, it may be very boring to spend an entire day or two in Nazca.

You might look into flights which depart Ica or Pisco as these are considered safer. I lived in Perú for many years and am not posting the dangers of Nazca flights out of some desire to point to excessive warnings by government bodies. We all know that government warnings try to cover every eventuality and thus are sometimes ignored as being excessive. If you read my other posts you will see that I do not normally warn people off the activities they choose even if I would not attempt them. But I believe that another accident is just waiting to happen as companies simply change their name after each accident and keep going. There is no control of the planes at Nazca and many small planes have been modified to fit more passengers, making them unstable when banking. I took a flight over the lines 30 years ago when there were only two small planes and one company. It cost double what the flights cost today. I would not fly out of Nazca today at any price. The choice, of course, is up to you, but I felt it necessary to post some information which I hope you and others will take into account when planning your trip.

I appreciate your comments - but then how about Lima and Arequipa as being dangerous and unsafe, wouldn't than it be wiser to stay away from Peru. Also, one of the tours offers a flight from Ica but then it adds that you need to get into a smaller plane in Nazca; Isn't that the same, as there are little or no controls in Nazca?

Lima and Arequipa have a lot of petty crime but nothing outside what you find in most large cities in South America. Most people have no problem. There is no reason to not go to Perú if you take the usual precautions.
I am sorry if my post bothered you. It was just a heads up for your consideration. No doubt you have googled about the safety of the flights over the lines, have made your own evaluation and are satisfied.
Have a good trip.
