Can Mr. AVRooster, or anyone else, suggest a couple of milongas for two American gals who will be travelling to BA? Also, what are some suggestions for the puertas cerradas? Have just started reading the Forums and they are wonderful. I believe that Mr. AVRooster should have the nickname of the Ambassador! Thanks.

The ambassador is right here for you gals! LOL!!!
Unfortunately, he is an older guy who cannot dance at all, or he would jump at the chance to show you gals around BA milongas.
I suggest you gals use the TA search feature here: http://tinyurl.com/nw9f4
to research the subject and get back to this forum with any doubts.
You can do the same for "puertas cerradas". I only went once to one of those places and hated it. I went with some fun people, or I would probably have left before dinner was over. Do you realize you would be overpaying for meeting other tourists? Well, it's a matter of taste......
I'm a proscript from TA. You may or may not have fun reading this thread: http://tinyurl.com/ovh8f
Well, let me know. I LOVE it when people ask for me by name.
Have a great time in our town.
I loved my experiences at the puertas cerradas. We went to 3 of them and one of them was definitely not filled with tourists - it seemed to be more locals. That one was Almacen Secreto and I think their website was in Spanish only. The other 2 were Casa Saltshaker and Casa Felix.
We didn't go to any milongas, although there was one right around the corner from where we stayed in Palermo Soho. We did go to 2 jazz bars - Virasoro and Thelonius. Both were excellent.
Thanks for your thoughtful replies. One of the marvelous aspects of the forum is that it allows for widely dissenting opinions.

One of our goals for the puertas cerradas visit was to be able to access a local dwelling...see how the locals live.
However, how expensive is expensive for a 3-5 course meal? We may re-think this.
I found a list of milongas on TA...thanks for the tip. Now to narrow it down to one of two! As a professional musician, I am very interested in hearing some "live music" while in town. Not interested at all in loud discos or the like. Appreciated your recommendations on the jazz clubs.
Isn't a non-dancing Porteno an oxymoron?

The least expensive puerta cerrada (from the list I provided above) was Almacen Secreto. We loved our meal there, and I'd definitely recommend it.
