Hi, my friends have booked with Peru Treks (http://www.perutreks.com/index.html) for a 4 day/3 night hiking tour of Machu Picchu and they've asked me to come, but unfortunately their company has booked out for that particular tour.

Is there any other reputable agency/company you've used or you'd recommend I look into as an alternative? I'll probably be on my own, since my friends are with the other group. My friends are paying $500 each, and the company supplies the license, guide, tents, and food, so I'm looking for something in the same price range or lower.

Hi!
Only 500 people are allowed to hike the INca trail per day. If the agency told your friends that they do not have availability, you won't find it with any other agency considerig that all of them work with the same reservation system. Even if someone cancels there's no way to book that spot.
The alternative plan for you would be the Salkantay Trek that also ends in Machu Picchu.

What Susana said is true in the fact that there is a limit to the number of hikers each day. However, another tour company might have a cancellation and then have an empty spot to fill. I would ask around. Another company besides Peru Treks people support on this forum and on Trip Advisor is Llama Path. Hopefully others will chime in with their experience. (We used Peru Treks.)

We used Llama Path in 2010 and couldn't rate them highly enough. In fact on the Macchu Pichu trek our group consisted of just my wife and I. Yet the days before and after we commenced our trek, those groups were pretty much full. Regardless we had a great time and the Llama Path staff were brilliant, food was great, the guide was extremely knowledgable and they made it a trip of a lifetime and at a great price too.

Unless you are going in November or late, permits are sold out. It won't matter what agency you check with.

We used Llama Path as well this past January. They were indeed terrific. Our guide has since formed his own agency.

Raul is very well known on the trail. Our kids are still in contact with him. I suspect my wife would love to be in real contact with him.

There are many reputable companies on this forum and others. Contact them and ask many questions and see who you feel comfortable with.

I went this summer with my 4 siblings and husband to hike the Inka Trail and everything about it was incredible. We booked with a company called Andesadventures and I highly recommend them.

First of all our guide Abeladero was fanastic- knowledgeable, fun and his group ofmporters are excellent. Every thing from the moment you arrive in Lima is organzied and runs withoutba hitch. The hotels younstay in before the actual hike are lovely as are the restaurants-- though aome are overly touristy.
Truly, we had not one complaint- the food cooked by the kitchen staff on the hike was delicious- 3 course cooked meals daily- and they even made special meals for my sister and I who are vegan.

The trip was an incredible experience from start to finish. If you book with themyou should definitely specify Abelardo as your guide-- he has done thentrail 600 times and justvdays after he left us wasngoingto run thebtrail in a 5- hour marathon with others from all over the world.

The trail is demanding and Abel and his sweeper are equipped to help you in all ways, make sure you are fed and hydrated and look out for any signs of serious altitude sickness.


We are all considering their Patagonia tour in the near future.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that this company takes you n the original Inka trail where you end at Yhe Sun Gate-- some companies do not, so look out for this.

There are many good companies in Peru for this trek and the alter treks, remember that the Classic inca trail is only one that takes you to Machu Picchu by the SUNGATE camping in Winay wanyna the night before..the alter treks like Salkantay or Lares will take you to Aguas calientes town first and then you go to Machu Picchu by Bus.
