Macchu pichu by train and trek
My wife and I and another couple want to travel to Macchu Pichu as part of a longer trip to Peru. The men want to do the 4 day hike on the Inca trail; for the women, that hike would be too strenuous. Is there any reasonable option for us to meet up, have the women do a less strenuous hike, or take the train the whole way. What interesting things can they do while we are hiking? Thanks.

There's a 2 days trek available. If your group is doing both the 4 days and 2 days trek with the same trekking company then I would talk to them to see if they can somehow arrange for the two groups to meet midway at some point, but don't be disappointed if they say it'd be too difficult to organize.
The women can also spend more time in and around Cusco and the Sacred Valley and then take the train to meet up with you guys at MP.

I agree, spend more time in the Sacred Valley and Cusco. A less strenuous hike that doesn't need a guide, is walking down from the Pisac ruins into town. You can hire a taxi to drop you off at the top. There are also some trails around Ollantaytambo. And some options to walk or bike around Ollantaytambo, Moray and the Salineras. Eg the Abra Malaga trip by KB Tambo

And you could also do the hike up to the Sun Gate at Machu Picchu (which is included in your ticket). So you'll see where the Inca Trail hikers enter into MP and get the view (if it isn't fogged over).
KB of KB Tambo has some info on his website

You could also look into what we are doing next month, the Lares trek with Mountain Lodges of Peru. I picked for two reasons. They have lodges (rather than camping) and they have each day a less strenous option. See the brochure here (this is for 5 day 4 night, they have a longer version too).

I did a lot of research as to what the different choices to Macchu Pichu are and this seemed like a good match for us.
